If you are using this generation of processors, especially on a Rampage 3 or Rampage 3 Black Edition, these motherboards were built around this processor. The I7 990X, like the Nvidia GTX 590, was comparable to the next few generations of processors in speed and function, the following generations of CPUs and GPUs were focused on power consumption versus any real huge next level innovation. The I7 990X is still a highly respectable CPU for any rig. Whether you are running it at base speeds or you're into overclocking, the I7 990X will still run any highly demanding program or game in tandem with a mid to high range GPU respectfully with high to max graphics settings. The years following it's release, most of the AAA games had to be carefully modded to even recognize a 6 core processor, and at 3.47gHz base processing speed, the only thing slowing your work or play down, is your internet bandwidth. If your motherboard is 1366, and you're wanting to get the most out of your rig you can, the I7 990X, accept no substitutions.Read full review

Very fast and powerful processor. I wanted speed and lots of threads, and I got it, along with a good graphics board. Be sure to run an "overclocking" application on it. Using the Intel utility with a DX58SO2 board I got an easy 8-10% speed increase while staying within specifications, meaning no temperature increase. I only briefly tested the "extremely aggressive" settings and got more than 20% speed increase with survivable temperatures but I chickened out on letting stay that hot forthe long term. This is all without a high end CPU cooler, or water cooling, but not the stock Intel heatsink and fan. I did learn a lesson about checking the thermal conductivity of the heat transfer grease. They all say they are the "best" but if one has a thermal conductivity of 1.5, and another has a 5, it makes you wonder what they think the word best means. (watch that you are comparing the same thing, e.g.thermal conductivity or resistivity and the same units of measure usually watts/(meter *degree Kelvin); using those units a thermal conductivity of 5-8 is good, 1 is not as good.) Stability is very good. During the autotune I almost never hit any instability, and when I did it recovered quickly. I have it running full out on several of the Boinc distributed calculations and it is always rock steady, and ready for more. It makes me wonder why Intel moved to adding graphics onto their next generation? I have one of those in the basement building a machine. I will see how well it does compared to a 990X and a separate graphics board. The new CPU's are bringing the price down on the 990X, so if you're buying a 990X that's a good thing. Be warned, you can overheat this puppy if you overclock and overload it. Make sure you have some hardware temperature monitoring and don't scrimp on the case fans and the CPU cooler. I'm writing this as if everyone was building thier own and can tweak this and that, but most people aren't that insame. So if you are buying a packaged system and want great performance, you will get it right out of the box. If you want to push towards outstanding performance then get them to install a good $80-$90 CPU cooler. If you want insane performance then go to water cooling, lots of case fans, etc. But no matter what you're after you won't be disappointed.Read full review
Why i bought it: Pretty simple really. Ive always wanted one. One of the best cpus on earth. Its also becoming increasingly hard to find them new in sealed box. This cpu will also serve me for a very long time. What i like most about it: Its performance. Its incredibly fast and powerfull. There is nothing it cant handle. What i dislike about it: Its price. They dont come cheap. But if its something you love then its priceless. Would i buy it again: Id love to get another but im going to be happy with just the one. Thanks.
This was part of a final upgrade. Got a Core i7 920, ASUS PT6 Deluxe, 12 GB RAM, GTX285, X-Fi in 2008. It has now been upgraded to: Core i7 990X EE, ASUS PT6 Deluxe, 12 GB RAM, ASUS GeForce GTX Titan, Creative X-FI Platinium,2 x SSD, 1 x HD. This rig will last me the next 3 years, largely in part to the 990X CPU. Even if my i7 920 was OC'ed to 3.5 Ghz, it no match for the 990x...even at stock.
Works great! No issues with install

very good product, using it with pleasure. pity that in Russia no one carries, although probably no longer need
