Dyson DC55. A good deal!
DC55 does what is expected if it to do. Strong suction, convenient operation, handy tools, easy and clean waste disposal. All for a fraction of the price of the ball version which is probably the newer and next model better. Could be a bit loud but I usually vacuum with music headphones on anyway. Amazing suction and really good quality machine. It was easy to put together when it arrived. It isn't very nimble though, so it's a bit of work to get it to turn and get into spaces - but I think it's still worth it. Must easier to push a vacuum cleaner than to pull it along behind and trip over the cords.

Upgrading
I have owned a Dyson DC04 for around 20 years and it has been very reliable. Only had to have a power cord replaced once and Dyson are always happy to oblige. The new DC33 is a wonderful addition, has fantastic suction and it is great at removing cat and dog hair. It has sensible attachments and is a lot easier to empty than the old DC04. Well I have tried so many vacuum cleaners, at different prices and different specs. I found there was always something missing, mainly the suction strength, especially on fluffy carpet.
