Budapest Concert is not the Köln Concert. Recorded 40 years later, it reflects in many respects all that Jarrett had learned in the interim. The first half is brittle, spikey, and for many, will be demanding. Even so, it is, nevertheless, very rewarding and shows just how far the artist had come since his groundbreaking German recordings. In the second half the shift towards melody results in some passages of exquisite beauty. Given the health challenges that Jarrett has faced in the years since this recording only sharpens an appreciation of his gift, so perfectly displayed in the Budapest Concert. The ECM vinyl is well recorded, mastered and packaged. Recommended.
