Good value, but troublesome to learn it's functions

The info. included with this unit is essentially useless, so be prepared to view YouTube videos and experiment with your first set of batteries to figure out it's many functions. The joy stick response is a little sluggish, but once you get used to this unit having to think about the commands you give it, you'll find it works pretty well vs. it's intended use. A plus is the ease of increasing accuracy of a waypoint location through repeated sampling of that location. Overall satisfied and almost over my considerable frustration while trying to figure this thing out (MUCH more difficult than other Garmin gps units I've owned and currently own).

    For Me , Problematic

I had an earlier model that I used with ease; no problems at all. This newer model is difficult to use, even with online instructions. I haven't used it in the field yet, and I am starting to think that I will just have to take the loss and buy a different model or brand. It, as far as I can tell, gives a compass bearing only on the compass, and it is not accurate (my older Garmin gave an accurate bearing that I could use with my compass).

  • Nice simple gps

This is a good simple gps for anyone who doesn't need all the bells and whistles. The biggest downside was the directions that came with it were not very good, especially if you are not real handy with electronics. However if you take the time to go online there are some great videos that explain the features really well. My husband recently used it on a hunting trip and was very glad he had it, especially after having issues with his compass.

  • Not user freindly. Difficult interface. Laborious to use.

You can't store and delete coordinates individually. You have to Delete All to remove waypoints etc. Why? Stupidly difficult to use. It will track your movement for you -but backtracking is difficult with the tiny map. Not sure why this thing gets such great reviews. Typing in Coordinates and naming files is slow and laborious. Newer versions must be better.

  • Bare Bones Hiking GPS

Seems to work good. This is a bare bones GPS which is good for me since I am not computer savvy. I pretty much use it only to get my coordinates to reference a paper 1:24,000 USGS map. It also draws a line on the screen to show you the route you walked and tracks the distance that you walked. With the line drawn that you walked you can always get back to your starting point. These are the only functions that I really want and the cheaper ETREX 10 is good enough for me. I am a bit worried about the durability. I also have a ETREX 20 which has greater capabilities as far as loading in USGS 1:24,000 maps. But that GPS unit has a broken selector button with regard to the zoom function. This is very worrying since I hardly ever used that ETREX 20. I sent that one back and they charge $90 to fix or replace. The ETREX 10 cost $90. Although the GARMIN units are supposed to be user friendly and intuitive to down load software maps, I have a difficult time doing so on the ETREX 20. Also, I purchased the DVD of 4 states form Garmin for $100. Once you load a map on a GPS unit, you can not load it on another unit with a different serial number. You need to buy another $100 DVD. I guess this is how Garmin makes money. As far as durability I will have to make a report in a couple of years or so.

  • Great GPS

This is my second etrex 10. Think I have had it now for about 5 years. It is easy to use, and I can read it with my old eyes. Gets good reception even under tree canopy. Easy to set and name way points. Good battery life, works in the extreem cold. Key feature I like is it displays the way points by closest to your current location. I handed it to one of my hunting buddies, showed him how to use it, gave him way points to hit, and he pushed a deer right to me at my ground stand, then navigated to my location to help drag the buck out. Cannot beat that... First time he used the gps and first time he hunted that land...

  • No instructions with unit

On line instructions were no help. A visual tutorial would be helpful. So far, after first starting to use the unit, it now gathers dust. I am sure, once instructed, this would be easy to use. It is just getting over the hump that is difficult. Not being technical, this was not easy to follow directions.

  • Mostly a good unit.

Main complaint is that it is difficult to see a track on the screen. Track is not dark enough. GPS visualizer dot com is what makes this unit. You can plot out the profile of your track or plot your track on a google map. COOL!

  • Little but packed with good things

This gps is a basic model, small, and can fit into your pocket while hiking. Gets satellite reception even in thick tree cover. The low cost and excellent features makes this small gps a winner.

  • Good value for the price.

Has a lot of useful features once you figure out how to use them. Instructions have a lot to be desired.
