I love reading about Light houses! They just have always interested and fascinated me. It all started with reading Jody Hedlund's great books about life in some of the Michigan Lighthouses back in the 1800's and early 1900's. Jody referred to this book "Ladies of the Lights" by Patricia Majher as the book that she read and based some of her characters on. Jody Hedlund is one of my favorite writers. She recommended reading this book "Ladies of the Lights". It is true accounts of actual ladies that were either Assistant Light House Keepers along with their husbands who were the Head Lighthouse keeper. They worked side by side, raised their children, and lived in the lighthouses for many years. Their are women that became the head Lighthouse Keeper as well. This was a dangerous profession back in the early days. A number of women lost their lives rescuing and trying to save people from boats that crashed on the rocks. It is an exciting and interesting true story of these very brave and heroic women and men. This also was a solitary life as light houses were off by themselves. I found this book so interesting and informative. Everything these wonderful folks did, how they lived, how the lighthouse is operated and kept very clean, The care of the lights, and lenses. I hope you will enjoy this book as much as I did. I certainly learned a lot and would recommend it highly.Read full review
