I bought these after watching numerous reviews on YouTube and reading some "Best Choice" selections on the internet. A nice pair of headphones with quality construction and supplied with 3 separate length cables that lock into the left ear cup. Very nice sound quality for home listening with excellent clarity, but a strong emphasis on the low frequencies that is certainly suited to certain musical styles or listening preferences. I would say that at around $140 they represent a pretty good value. You are not getting or paying for a lot of "bells and whistles" that you may not want or need such as Noise Reduction, Wireless/Bluetooth etc. My requirement was for something that I was able to plug in to my amp and listen to my music at higher volumes without disturbing the whole house. They do have the sensitivity to get driven by the micro-amps in a cell phone etc. Read full review

I wanted a pair of these for my studio ever since I first heard them at NAMM, and when the opportunity to buy them at a discount showed up I jumped on it. However, trying them out in my studio, I found that details (col legno in a string passage) that were clearly audible in my BeyerDynamic DT 235s, as well as both sets of monitors (Equator D5s and Monitor Audio Silver3s) were nowhere to be heard in AT50s. Very disappointed, I sent them back. If you want a pair of headphones that make recordings sound more spectacular than they are, these are for you. If you are looking for accurate cans for monitoring, avoid them.

The Audio-Technica ATH-M50 headphones are a great portable, travel, or DJ headphone because of their closed-back design and high sensitivity rating (99 dB). They are extremely durable and have a very high-quality construction. I would liken their build quality and feel to Sony or Shure headphones. Although, these don't utilize noise-cancelling technology, they still drown out the majority of external noise, and don't distort the sound as much as noise-cancelling headphones. These headphones are perfect for DJs or 'bassheads' as they're able to cancel out a lot of ambient sound and have a really strong bass signature. Additionally, the cable only comes out of one side so it is designed for DJ use. The only downside to these is that they don't have the highest sound quality in regards to accuracy of sound stage, especially the highs (treble). Although, these have better sound stage than bass-heavy Sony headphones (e.g. MDR-V6, XB500), they aren't quite on par to Shure SRH940 or Denon AH-D2000 -- however, they are significantly less expensive and still are enjoyable for the listener. If you have discriminating taste regarding the upper tonal ends, I would recommend the Shure SRH840/SRH940 in the ~$200 price range or Denon AH-D2000 if you want a more refined overall sound that still has good bass-emphasis.Read full review
After reading all the glowing reviews of these phones I made the plunge as I was looking for an audiophile type product and figured if these are getting such high grades why spend 200 or 300 bucks for a new set of cans, well I was wrong!!For my liking these were just ok nothing special to there sound quality. dont get me wrong here, the money spent is worth it but the expectations were way off as there are other products out there of equal quality and at the same price point as these, Grado sr60 and sr80 are even lower priced and IMO better, especially if you are a rocker. I did all the burn in and amped these also and still dint get what I thought I was buying, please give these a listen before buying, dont just take my word or anyoneelses either
These headphones are amazing! The highs are just right, the lows are smooth and precise and the comfort level is through the roof. I listen to them sometimes 6 hours at a time and have no discomfort what so ever. After the "burn in" period of about 40 hours, they just blew me away, as well as everyone else that has tried them. These leave the Beats by Dr. Dre in the dust and I just laugh at all those people that got those because their favorite NBA player has them. Search any audiophile forum and these headphones (and almost any set of headphones at comparable prices) blow the Beats away. The only thing the Beats are good for is making you look like a douche. I listen to mostly electronica (Swedish House Mafia, Fedde Le Grand, Bassnectar, some trance) as well as rock, some hip hop, classic rock and classical. After researching many forums and professional reviews, these are best suited for those types of music. The bass isn't so over powering that it distorts the rest of the music and has a nice smooth roll off. As long as you have high quality music files, you'll feel like you're listening to some of your favorite songs for the first time. Every time I listen to certain songs I hear things I haven't heard before, or hear them in a new way. They also seem very durable and well thought out. The headphone plug has a spring around the wire attaching to it so it doesn't get too bent. The leather on the ear pads is plush and you don't even feel like you have them on. They fold up nicely and are quite portable. I even use them while running. The Audio-Technica ATH-M50 s are the most bang for your buck. I got these for under $120 and would buy another pair if needed in a second.Read full review

Good headphones. I feel the bass is a little more than realistic (not easy for me to use as a mixing reference) but they sound good. Also, I'm not a pro audio engineer. But that's just my take. I prefer Sony MDR-7506 with a piece of felt over each speaker to mix with. I would use these to listen to music.

The only way to listen to this headphone in its sonic glory is to connect it to an amp or receiver with a bass boost or some sort of bass management aside from your normal bass and treble attenuators. The M50's frequency is flat. You won't get a whole lot of bass by itself. Emphasis on the mids and highs are its strong points. In my set up, I have a computer with my music in it, a headphone amp which I use as an intermediary device bet. my laptop and receiver and finally an old 80 watt rms Sony STR-DE405 stereo/pro-logic receiver set on stereo mode with a bass boost button. The headphone amp improves the sound of the headphones by itself but since it does not have a bass feature in it, bass still not as good.I came out of it using its audio out to the audio selector device, then to the audio in (cd, tape, video or aux. in) into the receiver. I use the audio selector to switch from the from the Sony receiver which my M50's is plugged in to and the Surround Sound set up I have. I don't have to be unplugging the headphones to the surround sound receivers' jack saving its' life expectancy. I have three ways to adjust the volume control: a) computer b)headphone amp and c) receiver. Three ways to adjust the bass, mids and treble: a) computers' equalizer, receiver bass & treble attenuators and the receivers bass boost button. The M50's bass is not simulated such as the Skullcandy headphones or boomy similar to a ported box speaker but rather a closed speaker box (air suspension). Mid bass is solid and it could go a lot lower with the bass boosted without being distorted. This headphone was designed to be flat sonically so we can equalize its frequencies to our liking. The bass, mids and the highs are so precise with my set up. I spent $160 for the headphone amp, $24 for the audio selector switch and a few cables. If you have an extra receiver, good. You can get away without the headphone amp and the audio selector switch. I use the headphone amp because it acts like a fixed equalizer with a volume control. It improves the tone of the headphones by not much and the receiver. Receivers with a bass boost are rare these days. I have three headphones and the only ones I listen to is, the M50's (for hours at a time).Read full review
I was looking to update my studio monitor headphones, after having them for nearly 10 years. I began by looking on sound/music forums for "Best headphones to monitor hip-hop". Throughout several forums, The Audio Technica ATH-M50x came up time and time again. I can honestly say the prevailing wisdom was right! These are great headphones. The construction is tight and really creates an immersive sound (these are closed back, so no room noise creeps in). The low end is just right on these headphones, (not too extreme, but gives enough for you to know what's happening with the bass and kicks). The mids are solid and the highs are good as well. These headphones are comfortable, the padded top is very nice. They don't squeeze my head, so that's good. While I wouldn't consider them lightweight, I also wouldn't call them heavy, either. If you make beats, or compose music these will be excellent (especially if you do hip-hop, soul, house, etc.) If you are mixing or mastering music, then I would choose another headphone that is more sonically flat.Read full review

The sound and comfort of the Audio Technica ATH-M50 headband headphones is a great value for the price. I love them. The cord is a bit heavy, but I love how long it is and it has a curlycue section that stretches when I want to leave the computer area where they are plugged in and let my dog out the sliding glass door. That is a really nice feature compared to the Philips O'Neill SHO9565BK/28 THE STRETCH Headband Headset I replaced with the Audio Technica ATH M-50's. Positive: I would purchase these again. They are comfortable The sound is really excellent The cord has give so I can keep them plugged in and step away without taking them off Good price and great value for the money Downside The cord is a bit heavy.
