I purchased the Ultrasone HFI-450's based on an impressive showroom demonstration of one of their higher end models. I was just browsing, and a saleman said: "Hey, try these on and see what you think of them". So I did, and then he flipped a switch on the preamp and some Gelelec speakers beside the system came on. They sounded great. I was waiting for him to switch the selector over to the headphones, which he didn't do after some time- so I took the headphones off. WHOA! Um, the sound I was hearing WERE the headphones. So spacious, they actually sounded like loudspeakers in a room. I was totally sold on the Ultrasones. Unfortunately, I didn't have the cash- so I decided to try the '450's out via a used pair on eBay. Despite claiming to have 'S Logic' natural surround sound, I couldn't hear ANY effect at all. In this regard, they sound just like any other headphones. All in all, they are fairly well balanced and resolve details in music admirably. Their voicing tilts towards the bright side. The closed back design keeps out external noises very well. The 'phones are comfortable for short listening sessions. I have a pair of Grado SR-60's which cost less than these, and they better the HFI-450's in every area except ambient noise blocking. This is my reason for the 3 star rating. Hopefully I can try out a pair of Ultrasone's high end models again!Read full review
Why did i buy it? Really, it was for a dare as i have heard that Ultrasone produce very good headphone with its natural surround sound which imitate real hearing by reflecting the sound from the pinna of the ear instead of pumping right into the canal like most headphone do. A great sense of depth while listening to live concert... a must. Good: Comfortable for use for long period of time and most of all cover my ear, at least my small ears. Loud and clear sound with strong Bass. Dual 3.5 or 6mm audio jack. Long cord MU Metal shielding (ULE, for Ultra Low Emissions) to reduce electromagnetic radiation by 98% as compared to conventional headphones. Bad: Esthetically not that stylish finish Can't oomph the sound from an ipod enough Not that cheap Feel a little fragile compare to later model. Why do i recommend? Easy matey, its really that good and once its on, its difficult to put it down.Read full review
