This lens is where the lowest price meets the highest image quality. I have had two of them, the first one was excellent like the second, but I sold it for the new 50 mm STM. But I missed the extra 10 mm, and now I use the 40 more than ever. It's a serious performer, you can just read the test reports. It may not look beautiful on a dslr in the beginning, but you'll get used to it, and love the results. For my part, it sits on a full format camera, and it is as good for video as for stills. With some 10x magnifying filter glass, it can be used as a macro lens. I have had results that I have sold. Go on, this is a no brainer.

Made up. My lens arrived 5 days early. In time for Notting hill carnival photos later today! But best thing is I got a surprise free uv filter and mini tripod in my box, which looks just about strong enough to hold the weight on my massive work camera. There was also a spare lens cap thrown in which will defo come in handy!!! Thanks! I was excited about getting the lens. But the rest has made my day!

A surprisingly good little lens for the price. for the price that is - I bought a 50L not too long after getting this one and am contemplating selling the 40mm already. Moral = if your saving for something don't buy toys. It's a good lens though, sharp and quite contrasty, AF is slow if your used to higher end lenses, but it's no slower than most non-L lenses (actually might be about the same as the 50L...) So while it's nice and small and does make the camera less bulky I'm not sure i'll use it all that much - if you want a compact camera... buy a compact camera. Might just be used for family events and going for walks etc - I do like the 40mm field of view on a full frame camera. However if your looking for a portrait lens to use instead of zooming in with a Kit lens ie.18-55mm then this will let you take portraits in about 2~3 times less light than that lens, and allow for a shallower depth of field. - so I do recommend it. Also despite the new AF motor it does work on my EOS film body if anyone was wondering...Read full review
This lens is becoming one of my all time favourites and I have a few L lenses. It is sharp, light weight and reasonably quick with AF. I use both full frame and crop cameras, I prefer it on the crop for portraits and on full frame for walk about. There is some heavy vignetting at F2.8 on full frame, easily dealt with in Lighroom 4 or allowing it to be part of the photograph. The three main advantages of this lens are: 1 The optical quality is excellent. 2: It is so small and light you can take almost anywhere without the bulk of large lenses, and 3: It is an absolute bargain at the moment. Canon has announced the new ef35 F2 IS lens, I think that lens might be the ultimate in this range and I will probably buy it, however it will be bulkier and cost several times as much as the ef40 2.8
Lenses I got seem near to mint condition, focus is fast and discreet as expected, light weigh and luminous !

It may not be the sexiest looking lens. It may look a little stubby on your DSLR (I personally use it with an adopter on an EOS M) but this lens if highly capable. I have no complaints about auto focus, and the image is sharp across the shot, and chromatic abortions are virtually nil. On a crop sensor (1.6) camera, the equivalent focal length is quite long (64mm) which really suits my photography. On a full from camera 40mm focal length would be a perfect all round lens. Best thing is the price. For the money, it's rude not to have one of this super slim lenes in your kit bag.

I like this Lens, my camera (Canon 6D) is now nice and compact when it needs to be. No need to buy a mirror-less DSLR

Having read a number of very positive reviews of this lens - and thinking hard and long as it seemed unlikely tha such a cheap lens (less than £100) could collect such high praise. However many years ago I used a similar lens on a Pentax and remembered how compact and light it was, so decided to go ahead and purchase. I perhaps should have guessed it would be a grey import as it was £30 odd cheaper than mainline suppliers but so far it ticks all the boxes. It's very compact, well built and is producing some impressively sharp images. Above all it makes my 5D Mk3 much less obvious for casual shooting and so much lighter to carry around. A good buy!

I bought the Canon EF 40mm F/2.8 lens mostly because I would then have a reason to switch lenses - because when you get your first DSLR that's literally the coolest thing on the planet, for a few days at least. Now that the shine is off the apple I can say that I am not disappointed. Compared to the Canon EF 18-55mm Kit lens that came with my camera the 40mm is sharper and with the larger aperture can give me some very nice pics. The 40mm lens equates to a 64mm lens on the 700d which is quite tight but not impossible to use indoors. I have got a few good shots of my other half and finally got the tack sharp eyes that I couldn't seem to get with the softer kit lens.
The quality of the lens is very good. I'm using it with a Canon 100D, and this lens makes it a very portable camera.
