About this product

Product Information

"A fresh and moving story of a mother's dedication to acquire a coat for her daughter in post-World War II hard times. Anna's mother decides to trade the few valuables she has left for wool and for the services of a spinner, a weaver, and a tailor. Lobel's pictures do a tremendous job of evoking the period. Insightful and informative, this may make children consider how precious the ordinary can become in times of turmoil."--(starred review) Booklist

  • Great Historical Picture Book

Based on a true story in the aftermath of World War II, this picture book tells how a mother who had no money bartered what she had to get a coat for her growing daughter. It shows how cloth comes to be, and is a lovely story. My elementary-aged children enjoyed it greatly.

  • Great story for children.

I like how this story shares the sacrifices made in order for this mother to make her daughter a coat. A part of me wishes the ending was the little girl meeting a poor child who needed the coat more than she does and she gives them the coat. However, I'm still very pleased with this story, and it teaches a child all that goes into simply the creation of a coat. It also teaches a child that they shouldn't take anything for granted.

  • Fantastic narrative of clothing made from sheep to garment.

I love reading this book to grade school children when I am demonstrating making yarn on a spinning wheel. It gives them historic perspective on how clothing was made.

  • It takes a village.

How delightfully told how the many hands make the coat happen. A wonderful explanation of the talents of the artisans in textiles. The mother's persistence is endearing.
