I prefer the "old school" dungeons and dragons. The current Wizards of the Coast editions make it too easy to create a powerful character and the new generation doesn't role play as well because of it. I recently joined a dnd group that is playing a hybrid version. We have a handful of people trying it out for the first time. Some had the new 3.5 but none had the old 2nd edition handbooks. I ended by 3 of these 2nd edition handbooks for the "newbies." I have all first and second edition stuff and scoop up all the old TSR stuff I can get. WOTC has changed a lot of stuff from TSR. Deities change alignments, now Paladins can be of any alignment. The older versions made you think twice before committing an act of suicide. Characters had more depth. You didn't try suicidal things only to shrug it off and start fresh ten minutes later. I can tell you that the people trying the 2nd edition for the first time have been pleasantly surprised how much role playing go into it compared to 3.5.Read full review
The 2nd Edition version of Dungeons & Dragons was, in my opinion, the perfect blend between player and character. It allows a mature audience to experience that old feeling when running around outside as a child playing an imaginary game of "Cops & Robbers" or "Cowboys & Indians". There are many games out in the world, but this one, by far, is the best one to encourage the usage of imagination, intelligent thinking, team work, problem solving, and social interaction...just to name a few. Anyone looking to instill these things into thier children, or just want to enjoy a simple yet challenging multi-player game, should read and try this game.
Great product. This version of the original role playing game began adding several optional rules to the main body of the D&D rule set. The game also started a trend toward character customization. Try it out for a fun old school romp.
