The 4" size is inconveniently large if you're upgrading from one of the older smaller phones (3.2" Nokia 700). It no longer fits in your pocket easily and it's bulky if you like to hang it from your belt. Manufacturers should make a few smaller smart phones? The Nokia 700 was the last really small smart phone produced... and that was in 2010!!! 4" isn't small enough for many people. The one thing it's missing is a flash. Most phones this price range have a flash. Using the flash as a flashlight... has proved remarkably useful over the years... so it's absence is sorely missed. For some reason it doesn't correctly sync to my email. I think it's updating once a day... even though it says it's syncing every 15 minutes. This is annoying. We're up to Android OS 7 now... so why are they still releasing this with Android 5.1.1? There seem to be a few hacks to take it to OS 6 or 7... but haven't attempted any of them yet. One major item that is missing from 5.1.1 is the ability to specify where new apps are installed. Ideally you should install new apps on the MicroSD card... otherwise you soon run out of space on the 8GB of internal storage. Manually going into each app and specifying that the storage be moved to the SD card it slow and doesn't always work (not every app wants to be relegated to the SD card). The sync problem is probably be resolved in OS 6 or 7? A simplified interface is probably all it would take? OS 5.1.1 makes it hard to correctly set up your email. There are at least 5 different ways to stuff up the delivery of your email... Presumably there are probably 6 ways... as my email still isn't working? Samsung help was very helpful when I emailed them about this (haven't applied the suggestions yet)... so this is a positive. The phone response is quite snappy. The 1GB RAM with 8GB of storage is well worth getting (some only come with 768 MB)... as it filled up really fast. If it gets too full it's going to get very slow. The biggest mistake people/manufacturers make is to be stingy on the storage. Whatever you buy you're going to be stuck with for the life of the phone. If you don't intend to put any apps on the phone or keep the number of apps to a minimum you probably won't run into problems. However if you want to experiment with different apps you'll probably soon run out of space... and then the phone will slow down dramatically, tend to hang, etc... I had a bit of trouble controlling the apps. They don't always turn themselves off when you want them to. However in general when you tell an app to turn off it seems to turn off. That means you seem to have enough control to turn off problem apps. It was also easy to uninstall problem apps... which made the process of experimentation easier. This phone comes with 4G... while many similar phones in the Samsung range don't. This was one specification that is easy to miss... but very important. Battery life was mediocre but it would last a full day if you didn't use it a lot. OS 6 and 7 apparently have a number of battery conserving improvements and should help. However the main problem is leaving on wifi, bluetooth, GPS, etc... when you're not using them. They all drain the battery... and if they're all on they drain the battery fairly quickly. Turn off your unused apps and services? Transfer the contact list to the new phone via contact cards (via bluetooth) was fairly trouble free. You learn a lot about synchronisation by dong this. It was a relatively intuitive interface and the experience was positive. Setting up a Samsung account wasn't too hard... although it was never clear if the synchronisation had been completed or not. It would be nice to have more positive feedback telling you a bit more about what has been synchronised... so that you can be sure that the process was successful? Overall the phone is well priced and the user experience is pleasant. :-)Read full review

Overall the phone works Ok.... but.... when on a call two disturbing things often happen. Sometimes I can hear the caller - but they cant hear me. Other times (maybe my ear touches the phone and) the call is mysteriously ended and wants me to send an sms!.

While the phone is functional, there are a number of problems. 1 Battery life appears limited, after a few days of use. 2 The SIM contacts are poorly aligned for a sim card 3 The cable supplied is a "charge only" cable. This hardware downgrade is not listed in its technical features and is a significant breach of trust.

Bought as present for someone who never had a smart phone, and they found it quite easy to use. Good battery life, and was bought factory unlocked, so any SIM card can be used. Has good features, and fitted the bill perfectly for the user. Would highly recommend.

Nice and small, getting used to small keyboard as I have clumsy fingers, but easy 2 use as I said would recommend

I prefer the smaller screen size after having a work iPhone 5s, as it's not cumbersome but still easy to read and use. The J1 Mini (2016) is a great phone and very reasonable priced against iPhones, but still does all the same things for me, like having emails (from various email accounts at the same time). The reaction time on the phone is fast as well.

This Samsung J1 Mini Is a great little phone, it fits easily into any pockets, and comes unlocked so it's super handy, and is great even as a second phone when you go out and you can't be bothered dragging that other great BIG ASS other phone with you, just swap your sim and go, no problems, the only negative thing about this phone is that I wish the battery would last just a little longer than a couple of days.

Bought this phone thinking it was good. The phone has poor battery life and also has extremely poor phone network range. Probably should have just bought a new one instead of one that was unlocked.

We have found this a great little mobile, easy to use and easy to learn to use. Battery life ok but needs to be watched, especially when set to receive Wi-Fi. Small size makes it ideal for a ladies handbag. A good choice !
