INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER - In this modern classic, the acclaimed New York Times bestselling author explores the incomprehensible depths of madness and captures the insanity of violence in our time or any other. Patrick Bateman moves among the young and trendy in 1980s Manhattan. Young, handsome, and well educated, Bateman earns his fortune on Wall Street by day while spending his nights in ways we cannot begin to fathom. Expressing his true self through torture and murder, Bateman prefigures an apocalyptic horror that no society could bear to confront. "A masterful satire and a ferocious, hilarious, ambitious, inspiring piece of writing, which has large elements of Jane Austen at her vitriolic best.

Just as relevant today as in the 80s

Oh yes, psychopathy/sociopathy is thriving in the USA. Deja vu, the soulless yuppies depicted in this book have lately been overrun by rebel flag waving rednecks, but whether 1% or not, the general mood is the same - sneer at the homeless, worship Trump, and spend outrageous amounts of money in order to feel good about yourself. Seeing as people routinely get away with murder (and worse crimes against humanity) these days, it doesn't seem that much is changed. The dreary obsessive descriptions of what everybody is wearing gets really old, but if we mentally replace that with an obsession with technology and what brand gadget everyone is holding, its a pretty seamless transition between then and now - we definitely value stuff over people.

  • Top critical review

There is some merit, but lacks any humor to it's darkness

The novel itself feels too long and while it is well written, I at most found it entertaining, it never felt like a dark comedy or even gallows humor. When it is dark, it's just that. I find it far too sinister to be funny. The parts that could be funny are repeated so much that they become tedious. But the way Ellis writes makes up for this, greatly. I don't feel as if Patrick Bateman becomes and interesting character until serious mental cracks begin to show. But, all in all, the novel's ending is far better than it's beginning, however lacking the humor may be.

  • Some of the character names are different, reads like a director's extended cut, and I too believe Bono is the devil.

Book is better than the movie

  • I need to return some videotapes

The story was set in the mid-1980s, but it could just as easily be set it our modern era, minus Ronald Reagan. Very interesting how many times Trump was mentioned. After reading this book you might gain an appreciation of your local financial psycho. Just remember not to visit him at his swank, postmodernist condo.

  • Excellent, buy it.

Bret Easton Ellis writes a compelling and graphic novel that drags you deep into 1980s Wall Street. The story and characters are captivating, and if you’ve seen the movie, hearing the actors voices as you read elevates the experience.
