This is my first Kindle, so I didn't know what to expect. I'm very happy with it. Granted, the Fire's touchscreen is easier to navigate, but the loooong battery life on this one is wonderful. I learned the buttons and navigation system quickly. It came bundled with a leather case, which I like a lot. Unless I haven't figured it all out yet, it seems to show the books in my library in a list, intead of pictures of each book. That's OK. The long battery life is the best. We get blackouts ever so often, so I wanted to have something I could use during a blackout. The screen does not light up, but a clip on light will take care of that. Oh, and it's a little slimmer, smaller, and more lightweight than the Fire. Very easy for me to read and carry around.

Screen has no backlight and is very tiny. If I'd realized it, I would have spent more than $20 for a used Samsung. Now I just have a paperweight or a target to shoot at.

The eReader is in good condition, light weight, easy to use and read from. The only draw back is there is the screen is not back lighted but for this price the screen is clear and easy to read with lights in the room. There is a scratch on the screen as indicated in the product notes but it is easy to ignore. I love the case. I am pleased with this purchase.

I love the e-ink display! So much easier on my aging eyes than back-lit screens. For the majority of my reading needs, color isn't important, so this works great! I've used the kindle app on my phone, tablet, and computer for years -- I love kindle e-books -- but I never got around to buying an actual Kindle device until recently. I wish I'd bought one years ago! I bought this 5th generation one used, about 8 years after this model it was released, and it's still great! Battery life - WOW! I usually read 2 or 3 hours a day during the week, and sometimes 5 or 6 hours on Sat and Sun, and this just keeps going! I usually plug it in about once a week - but I've never had the battery run out on me. If/when this one needs to be retired, I'll definitely look for another with the e-ink display, but at 8 years old, this one is still going strong, and works perfectly!Read full review

I bought this for my son. Hands down I like it. I took the time to play around with it before I gave it to him for his b-day. Vary convenient item to have. Books are easy to load it they are from an external source. And the books from amazon easily transfer to the device. The screen is very readable and the navigation is simple to understand. There are two things I noticed about the device I didn't like but they are just annoyance issues. One is the page buttons. I know they are there for people who are either left handed or right handed. I just find it annoying when I pick up the device with the hand I like to hold the device with and accidentally hit a page button. The next thing is when typing searches. Don't get me wrong. The search function is a nice idea. But having to navigate to each letter and select each letter is also annoying to me. Thats the main reason I bought a bluetooth keyboard for my PS3 to shorten the letter selection process. All in all we both love this device. I think I actually use it more than him.Read full review
My daughter's classroom is using the kindles to promote reading efficiency. The original kindle is alright for beginners, however the screens are small. If you want to do more than just read I would recommend upgrading to a larger version with a full screen and more features. That said, the battery life is excellent and it is light weight and portable enough to take anywhere.
Some of my friends offered this product to myself. I made a comparison tour before I ordered it, and I fund it for the best price/value rated product. It is highly liked for me, eas to spend more and more freetime with it instead of example TV, so I am happy. Overall I love this kindle, only page up and down buttons would be a bit better in opposite order - based on size of my hands, but this one is not a large issue, only a question about confortable handling. I have never tried any other e-ink technology readers, but as I am very satisfied with kindle, I don't want to try any others. Compearing to tables or notebooks I find kindle much better to my eyes.
It is great when you do not have good eyes to read. Lightweight and with a good battery . simple and friendly management.

Great for reading e-books, If your not a casual reader, then this is not for you. Holds plenty of books, long battery life, adjustable screen, you can rotate the screen 90, 180, 270 degrees, which is useful depending where you want the buttons to be when you read. Confusing button layout at first, but once you use it for a while, it isn't very hard to get used to. The paperlike screen makes it easy on your eyes when reading, and helps prevent getting a headache. Great product overall.
I love the feel of a real book in hand, but sometimes it's just not practical to carry a bag of books around! I also love reading before bed, but don't want to disturb my partner with a bright light. I love that this is so small and lightweight, and has a long-lasting battery. I bought a case with a built-in light for it, which illuminates the screen without having a backlighting that can strain my eyes. It's easy to use and figure out, and it's nice to be able to read one thing and immediately jump to another!
