The monocle is clearly made from one of the ring frames all trial lens are produced in. In my case, it appears a plus diopter sphere frame was used. Here's the tickler --- my plans were to remove the plastic plano lens and substitute with an actual convex lens for closeup reading. But! despite the monocle's lineage, the opening is too large to accommodate the standard 38mm glass which comes with virtually all trial lens sets. That's truly puzzling. The glass from another trial lens insert is about one-fourth-inch too small to make a fit. On the plus side, the monocle IS a true monocle in that it is equipped with the {gallery) loops which fit above and below the eye lens for a snug fit when wearing it. Next time I go in to see the eye doctor, I am thinking of getting him to write a prescription for a +2.00 convex reading glass to fit this frame; Yes, you have to present a prescription to the optician to get that done. The only thing an eyeglass maker will fill without a piece of paper is a plano lens ---- plain glass. Surprisingly, he/she gets a lot of people (mostly females) wanting to wear bogus eyeglasses for the "look."Read full review
