Superb design, quiet and precise, one of the best.
On the face of it this little mouse looks like any other flat mouse for a Surface or laptop, but look a bit closer and you'll notice the excellent design. In the early days, Microsoft mice were unquestionably the industry standard, but then other companies caught up. The dust-gathering roller ball and cable with mini-DIN plug are long gone, but now Microsoft's Bluetrack technology puts them back on top, as it's far superior to yesterday's optical or laser tracking. The Microsoft Surface Mouse operates wirelessly via Bluetooth, which most equipment will have nowadays, or just get a cheap plug-in USB dongle for a few dollars. It's made of smooth, plain, matt plastic or ABS with a genuine metal scroll wheel and two buttons. It has no need of drag-inducing pads on the underside, or indeed a mouse mat for that matter, and all you see is a thin Teflon slider enclosing the blue light emitter and a discrete pairing/on-off button. The battery compartment cover looks like any other, suggesting a sharp push is needed to unclip it, but it's actually held securely in place with magnets, and then easily pops off just by pressing one end. The AAA batteries inside both face the same way so that you don't have to figure out which way round they go; a simple but incredible innovation which should have been standard in all battery compartments fifty years ago. Well done! Otherwise, it's a bit flat but just about comfortable enough for long periods. (If you should find it too flat for extended use, try sticking a lump of foam or cork on top of it with Blutack.) A superbly designed little wireless mouse, quiet and precise, one of the best.
