focus here is CHARACTERS NOT battle~ 3 STARS worth watching once
PLOT: THE residents inside Leningrad are starving and the war grinds on. 1940~ Leningrad is surrounded and the Germans have a new *tactic*~ bomb them and starve them. Leningrad is one of the largest Soviet Cities with over 20 Million of people. With NO food coming in the starvation diet gets worsse. The focus here are 4 people~ a Soviet POLICEWOMAN~NINA~~~~and Kate a engish/russian journalist who got left here by mistake, a disabled boy and his sister. Kate (Mira Sorvino) is a russian born english JOURNALIST who goes to Russia to see the effects of the war and ends up left in Leningrad after an air strike. As the War grinds on more and more people are starving every day. The policewoman NINA soon befriends the children and Kate and they form a *family* of needy staving people. While Kate works with an aging diva of the arts who gives her black market coupons to eat and her friend the NINA gives her forged papers. How ever the paranoid Russians soon are looking for KATE as a suspected spy. Armin Muller Stahl is one of the German Generals WHO RUTHLESS carries on the seige of the Germans to destory and starve~ This is a fast moving movie but the focus is not the war but the interation between the four people. As the city starves so do they. I have to give the POLICEWOMAN NINA~~~BECOMES more the hero here than Sorvino but she barely gets a credit on the dvd cover or back and she was more interesting and did more to help them live. The ending is abrupt. There are some first rate CG (special effects) and an EXCELLENT DIRECTOR who gives a look of deperation and hopelessness every step of way along with excellent angles and lighting. WORTH THE WATCH ONCE~ I GIVE IT 3 STARS FOR STORY~ I WOULD GIVE IT A 5 FOR DIRECTION fantastic CG and special effects. THE ONLY thing that keeps this going is excellent character development. the ending is a sorry thing too~Read full review

if your a history buff you will enjoy the movie nice story and good characters rarely told in American movies at least that I have found to this point got a sizeable movie selection
