These lenses are terrific, the narrowest depth of field I've ever known, renowned for the ‘BOKEH’ (swirly background effect). Keep it wide open for maximum effect, but if DOP too narrow – close down the iris till you have the desired amount). I'm using mine for HD video on a Canon EOS 700D and the results are lovely. There's a little bit of backlash on the focus ring - not an issue for stills - but a bit annoying for focus pulling on video shooting. The only way around this is to make sure you take up the slack (in the direction you want to pull) before you turn over. Some ND filters would be a good idea if you want to shoot at f2 in bright conditions. Bizarre front aperture ring can be locked off at f2 which is quite handy in case you inadvertently moved the ring. On this particular lens both the focus and aperture rings are quite stiff - but I actually prefer this, I have another one of these lenses that was supposedly stripped, cleaned and reassembled - but the iris ring is very loose. Not a problem if I lock it off at f2 though. On this particular review lens it actually turned out to be a 39mm screw fit (ALA Leica, early Zenit etc), but you can get 39mm adapters almost as easily as 42mm ones. Also, calling a M42 screw fit a 'Pentax' fitting is a bit of a misnomer. M42 screw fit lens will fit all cameras (with the correct adapter) - not just Pentax cameras. Just be careful (as I wasn't) and make sure you buy a lens adapter to fit your camera that will maintain focus to infinity - as some adapters will only work in close up or 'Macro'. Obviously this is a prime lens - so no zoom capability - unless you have a digital focal length change facility on your camera (not really recommended!). I like this lens very much, and for the £20 I paid for it I've really got no complaints!Read full review

Yes this range is famed for its unusual bokeh, usually seen with fairly close macro work but for me this tight depth of field shines when taking portrait shots. For those of you using a modern DSLR it's worth giving one of these a gowith an adapter - aperture and focus are controlled manually and it's a much more organic and involved feel taking a shot. what's also great is that you'll get some shots that are very unique to this type of lens, swirly bokeh and all. Brilliant fun and another angle creatively!

I bought this lens so I could reverse it onto my slr, and use it as a macro or magnifier lens. Even though it is an old lens, it performed very well.
This is a must lens for people who want the old 35mm style picture. Great price but you do need an adapter ring to fit to a dslr
