If you are thinking of replacing your Anderson plug with a twelve pin plug, well read on. The pins will only take a 4mm cable. Five years ago this was quite ample to run the fridge from the car battery. Todays auto electricians fit a 6mm cable to an Anderson plug. Want to use further connections through the 12 pin plug? I'm doing it but I am using the big fat pins for small currents. A caravan camera and I utilize a car accessories connection feed - definition required here because car manufacturers don't use the obvious meaning. When you turn the ignition key accessories cable comes alive. You might use the ignition fuse. I control the fridge (via a relay) through the accessories. i.e. small current through big pins. Breakaway units powered by the van batteries - small current through big pins. My car circuits detect when the van plug is connected - a simple plug connection of two pins - the car circuit can detect the 12v in the socket. Again - big pins for small current. Now you try fitting all those wires through the wire sleaves at the back of the plugs and sockets. You can cut them down but I ended up discarding them, replacing them with electrical tape. They are not designed to carry the number of wires. Now consider this - the big problem can be voltage drop usually resolved using big cables. I have not got that problem but I know of several instances where 8mm cables are used. So I don't recommend anyone to do as I have done because you will end up with an unsatisfactory job. Use Anderson plugs and small four pin plugs for your cameras. And if you have solar panels on your van design your circuits on the basis that the van is a unique entity that DOES NOT rely on the car battery. Then the car van connection does not carry a large currents - it is only used to charge a battery, not run appliances. May be one day automotive parts manufacturers will realise they have to design products that keep up with changing requirements. By the way - the EBay retailer was excellent.Read full review
