I got away from MM's years ago and went all out MC, higher end. Thought I'd try this MM as I'd read great things about the AT440MLb. It performs better than I expected and has the nicer elements of MM sound combined with the clarity and speed of a good MC. I have in the past tried the ATOC9ML2 MC, but did not get on with it at all. Using my switchable Quad 24p phono stage, the AT440MLb is far superior and has great frequency extension in both directions, and has a lovely musical quality to keep you listening for many hours. Maybe with a bright or thin sounding phono stage and amps this cartridge would be too bright, but in a refined higher end setup it's awesome for the price.

I purchased the AT Microline cartidge to go with my AT lp120 turntable. The performance was so good I thought I should get a replacement stylus to save for the future. This stylus has a micro linear diamond that mimics the shape of a mastering stylus and runs deeper in the grooves than the traditional stylus that comes with the turntable. The result is increased clarity which some perceive as increased high end- but really I think it’s just much clearer sound as the bass and mods are still full strength. It has the added bonus of cleaning up the sound of older records that have been worn by a larger rounder stylus. My worn records from the 70s sound almost new! This isn’t a super high end cartridge and stylus, but it really improves the performance of a decent new or vintage turntable to at least CD equivalent quality, and it sounds fantastic with a tube amp. Recommended without reservation.Read full review

I record and remaster a lot of vinyl and have used a number of different cartridges. There is no better cartridge in its price range. I have watched the cartridge be discontinued, discounted, and finally increase in value. Some have complained of brightness. Once the cartridge is broken in after a few dozen hours of play, the brightness goes away. Itrack at about 1.4 g and the detail and broad soundstage are truly amazing. I and hearing things in the music I never knew were there making it easier to remaster and digitize my vinyl. Mounting the cartridge is delicate as setting the tiny screws in the cartridge shell is tedious. Be sure to set your tonearm correctly and check that the cartridge is properly aligned at the correct distance in the shell. When done correctly the rewards are the greatest. I bought mine from a UK dealer and did some research to be sure I would not have to pay duty. I was able to get a good price by doing some searching around the world. The only drawback was the week it was held up in customs.Read full review

I bought this after being disappointed with the Nagaoka MP110. The 440mlb has more stereo separation, and detail. OK, I keep the Nagaoka, good for older records, and bassy music. But one thing I admit, I like brighter cartridges, as I also own an Ortofon 2M Bronze. It's always a question of taste. People complain about lack of bass of the at440mlb. I don't agree.

Having read good reviews about this cartridge online, I bought one as an upgrade for an older AT cartridge. It's a little bit fiddly to fit with those small screws & nuts on my RB300 arm, but I did it in about 10 minutes (and thats the first time I have ever changed a cartridge), plus setting up with a stylus protractor & weight gauge another 10 minutes or so. I am very pleased with the results! I thought my old AT cartridge was good, but the AT440 pulls an increased level of detail from my vinyl, with better channel separation. High frequencies are clearer, bass is tight & deep. It has seemed to benefit from a little "running in" time, but what a great excuse to sit & listen to some of your favourite tunes. I consider the AT440 an excellent great value upgrade for an older or a budget cartridge, I am well impressed by the improvement in sound quality from my vinyl, while keeping that "listenability" that makes you want to play record after record.Read full review
