I've seen many of the old Sherlock Holmes shows on TV and movies made in the past. I really enjoyed seeing this updated version and especially seeing Robert Downey Jr as the lead role character. I think he did a great job playing the part. I was actually surprised with Jude Law's (I don't particularly like him as an actor) role as Watson, he played his character very well. The only person who seemed to be out of place was Rachel McAdams. Although I've enjoyed watching her in other films, I felt that this was not the right role for her. In a way I found her to be a bit annoying. I think they should have put someone else in this spot. Otherwise, this is an action packed and fun-filled flick that shouldn't be missed.
Mysteries draw my attention. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote of a mysterious detective with his sidekick Dr. Watson, solving his specialty: mysteries! The title leads you to the character, Sherlock Holmes, the great detective. This is more about the life of the man himself, not only the mysteries he solves. What conflicts he goes through in his own life. Mentally. Physically. His perceptive nature. Intellgience. Sexuality. All in the movie. Pay attention you may miss something if you look away for a second.
I liked the attempt to recreate old London and its gothic weather. Lots of it is done digitally so no authentic feel is really ever achieved..but the attempt was noteworthy. I normally do not care for Jude Law in movies but felt he was the stand out actor in this one. The lead actress was so awful in so many regards that I feel she must have been cast on a lost bet. Sherlock himself is portrayed more with belligerent cockiness than as smarmy, but that is inevitable with Downey. This version of Sherlock Holmes is also apparently a master physical combatant that would give Jason Bourne a run for his money. Another cheap entertainment tactic. The crime solving itself is at the mercy of the writers and leaves no trail for the audience but rather wraps up each caper like a spoon-fed episode of CSI. And as usual, I had to put on the English subtitles for the non-English trying to speak in fine English. Enough already Hollywood. Recycling works with nature, not so well with art.Read full review
Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) stars as Sherlock Holmes in this 2010 adaptation on the old classic novels. Jude Law stars as Watson. Holmes and Watson are off to save London from the evil Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong). Older Holmes fans most likely will try to compare this movie to the movies that starred Basil Rathbone and that would be a mistake. In this incarnation, Holmes has taken a more pronounced approach to solving crimes. He has more whit and more spunk (if you will) and this ads to the story and leads to a few good laughs. Additional cast members include: Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler, Kelly Reilly as Mary Morstan, Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade, Hans Matheson as Lord Coward, Geraldine James as Mrs. Hudson, James Fox as Sir Thomas Blackwood, and Robert Maillet as Dredger Some may find this portrayal of Holmes someone offensive, other will fall in love with him. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves a good who-done-it, and a good movie.Read full review
A super fantastic take on the classic Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson fame. The amazing Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes and also Jude Law who is no slouch of an actor either. Plus it also Stars the beautiful and lovely and amazing Rachel McAdams. The movie is very interesting and grabs you the very moment it starts and keeps you locked in your seat. Maybe you can bribe somebody sitting next to you to go get some popcorn and a soda while you're watching because you're not going to want to miss this great action filled movie!
