This adaptation of the books by Edward Stratemeyer originally aired on ABC in 1956 as part of The Mickey Mouse Club. Today, it still retains its family-friendly charm. The 19 episodes contained on these discs feature high-quality video transfer. This black-and-white season of The Hardy Boys will appeal to young and old viewers alike. Starring Tim Considine and Tommy Kirk, this rollicking mystery show is sure to become a beloved family staple. The Mystery of the Applegate Treasure is a classic Hardy Boys installment. While spending the summer with their Aunt Gertrude, Frank and Joe Hardy begin to suspect that something fishy is going on at the nearby Applegate estate. As the adventure continues, the boys are confronted with a missing purse, buried treasures, and a nefarious gardener. As they seek to untangle the many mysteries surrounding this great estate, they get help from other classic characters. That includes their friends Perry Robinson and Iola Morton and their father, Fenton Hardy (Russ Conway.) Eventually, their escapades lead them to the buried gold, in classic Hardy Boys fashion. This was the first of two Hardy Boys serials that aired as part of The Mickey Mouse Club. Disney commissioned these serials in the 1950s, and The Mystery of the Applegate Treasure aired during the second season of the beloved variety TV show. The serial was inspired by the first installment in the book series The Tower Treasure. The boys here are younger than their literary counterparts, but the show otherwise retains the spirit of the books. This adaptation was followed in 1957 by The Mystery of Ghost Farm, which also starred actors Tim Considine and Tommy Kirk. The DVD set is sure to appeal to fans of the book series. This DVD set, exclusively released by Disney, contains a myriad of great features. Classic Mickey Mouse cartoons, music, newsreels, and more are sure to make any viewer nostalgic for the TV shows of the past. Just like being 8 years old agdin.
I realley enjoyed these DVDs. When the first disc is played you get to see an original Mickey Mouse Club program with all the songs, dancing and cartoon. Then the Hardy Boys begin. After that it just shows each episode of the Hardy Boys in order. I may try Spin and Marty next. Great product brought back the days of my youth. I remember this when it was first on TV in 1956. Sorry that I missed the tin can version, but this seems to have wonderful extras from the original Mickey Mouse Club. The Shawn Cassidy Hardy Boys series was not as entertaining as Tim Considine & Tommy Kirk. My only disappointment is that the SECOND Disney Hardy Boys serial has not been released (yet?) Nostalgia
I haven't seen this adventure story for 60 years. I remember enjoying it as a child on the Mickey Mouse Club TV program in the 50s. I enjoyed it at 69 as well.
