My speakers have never sounded so good. Built very well, very heavy! This particular one has a unpleasant odor emitting from it when it is on. I don’t know if it belonged to a smoker previously and maybe that’s it. Have to look more into it. But the unit itself is really incredible with a lot of power. That’s why I’m dealing with the smell, because it’s awesome. If anyone has any ideas about the smell, would love to hear suggestions. This unit looks very clean, barely any dust inside. I would definitely buy another if I had the chance.

First of all, I collect vintage Kenwood equipment. I have several of their most desirable pieces so I am very familiar with them. The Kenwood KR-9600 was their top of the line receiver for its year and will run with the best vintage monster receivers. At a conservative 160 watts RMS per channel with .08% THD it is the second most powerful of any production year Kenwood receiver, beat out only by the later KR-9050 at 200 WPC RMS. Trio-Kenwood also manufactured ham radio equipment and their expertise in the field of tuners means that they were equipped with excellent precision tuning components for phenomenal reception. The KR-9600 was the last of an era, as the later units (including the aforementioned KR-9050) suffered from cost cutting measures leading to a less satisfying unit. The KR-9600 did not have this handicap. Relatively difficult to source parts for a restoration, it is advisable to find a unit in a good working state and get it checked immediately. A full restoration can run from $500 to over $3,000 as of 2015. Loaded with features and brutal but beautiful with rack handles or handsome in wood the KR-9600 is a monster that does not disappoint!Read full review

This receiver was reported to have and I quote "power amp chips that are NLA" The KR-9600 uses discrete output transistors. The amplifier does have an IC in the power amplifier that is used to drive the VU meters(not the speakers). This is an excellent product built by Kenwood. This is not one of there's that cannot be serviced and are quality receivers.

The 9600 has power amp chips that are NLA, and have been not made for over 25 years. If one is working, then great, but at this point in their life span, likely to have blown atleast 1 if not both power amp chips. I have fixed them by using a donor, only to have it blow again in a few months. Maybe a full rebuild would have helped. But these are getting to where that full rebuild with new power amp chips are all that can restore them to like new state.

These old Kenwood kr9600 receivers are big and heavy but worth the extra effort because they play and sound great....more power than any sane person should ever need and enough tone control to make bad speakers sound good...

One of the last reviews claim that the CHIP that is used in the amp does not drive the speakers. THAT IS FALSE! I've been working on these for years. Who ever made that statement should do a little more research before before making false statements. JM
