I have owned and used these headphones for the past four years. They give a fairly clean, neutral sound and they are a good buy. Sound quality is improved by using an amp; I use a Mini Box D to boost the output of my iPod. But, the key feature that stands out is the noise isolation. It is very good at blocking out unwanted sound but the standard tips that come with the headphones are uncomfortable after an hour or so of use. Etymotic has a relationship with the company Sensaphonics that makes a custom molded sleeve for use with the phones. This makes the tiny and inconspicuous ER-4P stand out and become more noticeable. it also adds another $200 to the overall price of the headphones but I found them to be well worth it. On a final note, I should say that have had wiring problems with the Etymotic phones. The wires are very small gauge and are stressed where they all join in a molded rubber union. The people at Etymotic were wonderful to deal with. They bend over backwards to make things right for their customers and they fixed the problem even though the phones were out of warrantee. For that reason alone I would recommend buying these headphones.Read full review
The Etymotic ER-4P/PT are high-quality, audiophile-grade IEMs (in-ear monitors) with a more accurate and defined sound stage than many other more expensive IEMs, e.g. Shure SE530/535, Westone 4/4R, Triple.Fi 10 Pro, Sennheiser IE80. The only difference between the P and PT versions is that the PT comes with a compliance graph and some slightly different tips -- they're intended for professional use, while the ER-4P are intended for personal use. These IEMs have exceptional mids and highs. While some find the bass lacking, I believe it is very precise. If you are concerned about the bass, I would suggest either opting for the ER-4S/B or buying new so that you can return them if needed. One disclaimer worth noting, especially if these are your first IEMs is to try out the different ear tips even if the first ones fit well because the bass can vary depending on the tips used. It will also take some adjustment time to get used to the lows, as well as how the sound is reproduced with your body movement.Read full review
Several years ago, I gave my original pair of Etymotic ER-4P's away to one of my sons after he fell in love with them. I have "better" (fancier, multidriver) IEM's and since he wanted the ER-4P's so much; I just gave them to him. Almost immediately, I started missing them. I like bright-sounding IEM's without excessive or over-done bass and the ER-4P's suited my tastes in these areas. They also possess a certain transparency and transient response characteristic that my other IEM's just don't. This particular pair that I won on Ebay are apparently refurbs, but they might as well have been new units. They came in a factory case with all of the accessories and paperwork. I didn't have my original pair to compare them against, but I definitely like them as much as the first set I gave my son. So, if you can pick a set of these up (used or refurbs) at a price that's to your liking; I recommend them highly.Read full review

I was looking for a relatively high end set of in-ear headphones and portable music player. I have rather sensitive ears and I am very particular about sound quality. After A LOT of searching I ordered the Etymotic Research MicroPro ER-4P Headphones and the Cowon S9 Portable Music Player. When I first tried the ER-4P I was not impressed. Sure, the resolution was more than great, but the bass was weak and the soundstage was all over the place. Fairly disappointed, not because the sound was bad, but because I was expecting more, I continued listening to the system, occasionally. Until... sometime later I suddenly realized that I was listening to truly superb sound! The bass was now strong and precise, without being overwhelming, the sound stage was clear and broad and the resolution was of galactic proportions. I realized that, of course, as all speakers, the Etymotic Research MicroPro ER-4P needed to be broken in. After the break-in period the headphones proved to be everything that I hoped - and more. In conjunction with the superb and precise Cowon S9, they produce flawless, deep, rich sound. Audiophiles will love them. I keep listening to music pieces I thought I knew and discover new things in them I couldn't hear before. I listen to lyrics I couldn't discern and understand everything. Sometimes I just put them on saying "I'll just listen to a song or two while working on my computer" and I end up listening to hours of music. I literally can't take them off. The constructions may at first glance seem cheap, but this is misleading. In close inspection the trained eye can see quality cable and specialized materials for comfort, usability and durability. The finish could be better though. I must, in all fairness, say that I would not recommend them to people who like overwhelming bass. But then again, these people are not audiophiles and these headphones are not for them anyway. I would also not recommend them to people who feel uncomfortable having the headphones so deep in their ears (yes, they go REALY deep in the ears). Otherwise, I can't fault them in any way. Highly recommended!Read full review
I bought this earphone last December 2010, and I think I make the right choice. This earphone is very good. I use sansa clip 1st generation for player and use GoVibe Sharp for amp. I think you should use a good source so you can hear all the pent-up capabilities. The sound quality just great. Especially the mid and high detail, you could hear every sound in your music with very good separation. Very precision. The bass is perfect to in my opinion, not so boomy. Just fit and deep, right on it's place. But if you are a bass head, I think you should consider to look other earphone. This is definitely not for basshead people. So, if you look for detail and rich precision treble, go for the ER4P/S. It's one of the best earphone for clarity in the world. For you, if you're a basshead, please think about it again if you want to buy this earphone. Cheers.Read full review
The ER4 lineup is the in ear monitor (IEM) for enthusiasts seeking moderate sound pressure levels (SPL) with reproduction containing more detail, depth and accuracy then I have ever heard short of a live performance in an orchestral hall. I'm considering adding a digital analog converter (DAC) to the relationship as I currently use the ER4P-Ts principally with a laptop and my Google Pixel XL. ATidal subscription is also being considered. This is my 4th pair as I only ever buy used equipment and I am very hard on my IEMs. My last pair ended up as my daughter's chew toy and the pair before that was sweated out of existence. Before that, I inherited a pair from a client that was already I would say 40% consumed by the previous owner. They lasted a total of (5) years so that was a very worthwhile investment. Continue to change the filters as Etymotic recommends and you'll enjoy these IEMs for a decade. Keep the SPLs reasonable and I would strongly recommend not skewing your 20-80hz slider north on your equalizer. The ER4 line has an extended response (XR) model in the event you're seeking standing waves in your canal. Enjoy.Read full review

Ultimate ears, Jerry harvey, bose, shure, whatevs. Music just sounds right in these. Not hyped, not eq’d, not bass slammed. Just right. I’ve bought 10 pairs of gear over 10 years due to being an idiot and losing them.

These headphones are perfect play live instruments, acoustic, guitar. Unfortunately, they have a peak in the mid-high range - which is why almost impossible to listen to songs with loud instruments that play in this area. I listened to them with hifiman hm-601. Only with a quality source they give you what you want to hear. If you're going to listen this headphones with the phone - forget about them.
