Reviews"Barker's eye is unblinking; he drags out our terrors from the shadows and forces us to look upon them and despair or laugh with relief." -- The Washington Post "Mixing elements of horror, science fiction and surrealist literature, Barker's work reads like a cross between Stephen King and South American novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He creates a world where our biggest fears appear to be our own dreams." -- Boston Herald "Mr. Barker is much more than a genre writer, and his extravagantly unconventional inventions are ingenious refractions of our common quest to experience and understand the mysterious world around us and the mysteries within ourselves." -- The New York Times Book Review "Clive Barker assaults our senses and our psyche, seeking not so much to tingle our spine as to snap it altogether." -- Los Angeles Times "Outstanding ... a powerful and fascinating writer with a brilliant imagination." --J.G. Some of the stories were so creepily awful that I literally could not read them alone; others go up and over the edge and into gruesome territory...He's an original."--Stephen King "Barker's dark, powerful imagination--and his skill in pacing to keep stories surprising--make the horror grisly and effective."-- People "Barker's eye is unblinking; he drags out our terrors from the shadows and forces us to look upon them and despair or laugh with relief."-- The Washington Post "Mixing elements of horror, science fiction and surrealist literature, Barker's work reads like a cross between Stephen King and South American novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. SynopsisRediscover the true meaning of fear in this collection of horror stories from New York Times bestselling author Clive Barker. "The most provocative tales of terror ever published."-- The Washington Post Everybody is a book of blood; wherever we're opened, we're red... With the publication of Books of Blood , Clive Barker became an overnight literary sensation. His tour de force collection of brilliantly disturbing tales demonstrated a genius for dark invention that rivaled Poe and Sade. He was hailed by Stephen King as "the future of horror," and won both the British and World Fantasy Awards. Now, with his numerous bestsellers, graphic novels, and hit movies like the Hellraiser films, Clive Barker has become an industry unto himself. It is his powerful writing style and arresting imagery that have made Books of Blood a classic--and Clive Barker a cult phenomenon.

  • A good author's great beginnings - includes Books 1 thru 3 - excellent value

Clive Barker's beginnings have yet to be matched by any new author of horror. These are short stories. A form that is difficult to master and takes other skills than those required for a novel. Barker masters them all. Amongst others, you will find in here the stories that gave rise to the films of The Book of Blood, The Meat Train, and Nightbreed. This edition includes all 3 Books of Blood and an introduction from the author. The introduction is from a while back and led me to investigate a little further to find out a few startling things. I started Clive Barker's offerings with his large, roaming novels of Weaveworld, The Great and Secret Show, Imajica and Everville. If you go down this road start with Weaveworld and read them in order and watch an artist progress. Now I'm starting at his very beginnings - short stories. The Books of Blood are not for the faint of heart. They are downright frightening. But, all so well done. Happy Reading!
