When you plan on holding down the low end all night, look to Bassics™. The hex core wire and solid wound final wrap with unsilked ends bring you a great bass string at an economical price. Gauges: 40-58-80-102.
I happened across a set of these when the local music store was out of my regular GHS Boomers. The guy said these were basically the same, but without the cloth wrapping around the tuning key end of them. I gave them a shot because I'd rather try another set of GHS than to go with the other popular brands (which I dont really like). So glad they were out of the regular Boomers that day...because these are GREAT!! I instantly heard a much more rounded bottom end with clarity and a more balanced output across the board. Absolutely excellent for recording and it gave me a 'finished' sound right off the bat. I think the lack of the wrapping on the end of the string just allowed them to be more alive and definitely added sustain that I don't remember having before from my Fender P-Bass. It's never sounded bad, but the GHS Bassics seemed to be a perfect fit. Try them out and you won't be disappointed. One little tip I might add is after you have them strung through the bridge and before you have wound them to your tuning keys...cut the string right at two (2) tuning keys beyond the one your about to string (about 2 inches). This will give you enough to wind with no slippage but not so long you get a mess of a winding when it's tuned to pitch.
I have been using GHS strings for my 6 string guitars for years. When I needed a set for a newly acquired bass guitar, it only seemed natural to go with the same brand. Glad I did, as they have the same high quality to which I am accustomed!
I was reluctant to buy "budget" strings, but I took a chance on them. Then I immediately bought 5 more sets a few days later after trying them. Zero regrets.
