3 reasons I loved this movie: 1) The bridge collapsed in a town just miles from where my father lived! He, and a neighbor, went to help after the collapse! 2) Movie partially filmed in Kittanning, PA, next to my husband's hometown! Richard Gere pulled into Kittanning and parked right in front of my favorite little restaurant I went to everytime I went shopping there! 3) The movie was based on a prophecy that a Washington Post newspaper writer (Richard Gere's wife) who was killed while investigating this strange occurrence. I was born in Georgetown, DC! My mother worked at the Post when she 1st went to DC! SO...that makes 4 connections I have to this movie! NOTE: The Mothman was never seen again after the bridge collapsed!

Based upon true events around 1966-1967, The Mothman Prophecies centers around a rash of weird, somewhat supernatural, events reportedly occurring in and around Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Covering a story for the Washington Post, John Klein (Richard Gere) drives south towards Richmond. He unexpectedly has car trouble and finds himself far off course. He walks in the rain to try to find help and winds up knocking on the door of Gordon and Denise Smallwood (Tom Patton and Lucinda Jenney). Gordon becomes very irritated and angry. Gordon claims that John has knocked on his door three nights in a row exactly at 2 a.m. When Sergeant Connie Parker (Laura Linney) arrives to investigate, Klein discovers this is just one of many strange events happening in this small town. With Parker's assistance, John continues to seek answers to these freakish events. Soon, it becomes clear as mud what is going on and soon becomes convinced that some traumatic disasters have or will occur. Although this film evades many factual accounts of the Point Pleasant events, the filmmaker's attempts to dramatize the story and capitalize on the audience's overall appeal, seems to have paid off in many ways. The director has options to use documented facts and re-enactments with segments of fantasy and fact added, subtracted, or mixed together for overall shock appeal. One thing to realize is that the film was actually shot in in present day. What unfolds and what follows, centers around locals who reported strange encounters with UFOs, visits from men in black suits, metallic sounding voices on the line from strange sources calling people, and reports of seeing a winged creature that they soon coined the Mothman. Some locals actually foretold of future events, some of which came true, yet others did not. One such prediction of the December 1967 disaster did occur, and is the basis for the film climax. Although some investigative information points to a high probability that some of the events were perpetrated by a prankster name Barker. Other events suggest a much wider scope of occurrences to have fallen on one or several lone pranksters. This film succeeds at being an extremely unforgettable supernatural thriller that stands on its own and emphasizes its strengths as a quirky study of life and death imitating art. The director focuses on the theme of confusion within our own grey areas of our psyche where we struggle to differentiate between reality and make-believe. The cinematography was purposely dark, offbeat, gyrating, fading, sudden pans across confusing scenery, with a cross-eyed, blurry vision twist to boot. Mothman Prophecies contains looming moments with building intensity of light and sound, ominous music, and a creepy dialogue to match. This overall mood allows the viewer to become totally engrossed in one's self expressive doom, whereby a feeling of unseen and unforeseen forces might be lurking just around the corner hiding in the shadows or watching you from within your own mind. Boo! I've got to give this film a 5/5 or 10/10 for its spooky tone and unforgettable and spine tingling story. IF YOU LIKE MY REVIEWS, PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO LET ME KNOW BY VOTING.Read full review
This is a film where the dark mood sets the tone. Being an admirer of author John Keel's research on this subject matter I appreciated the way the filmmakers pulled this off. It moves like a mystery with an erie effect each step of the way. The interest level will keep your attention piqued throughout. I'm not normally a Richard Gere fan but I thought he did a really good job in this. Laura Linney is good, too. Tom Patton adds the odd charactor that one seems to remember most because of what he has experienced. It really gets spooky whenever the mothman communicates with Gere and some of the townspeople, especially Patton. This is a film that sticks with the viewer long after it's finished being seen. Do some background reading on the mothman subject and view some youtube videos about it and it comes vividly alive even more. It's not a film for the faint of heart. Be forewarned.Read full review
I've heard about the incident re: The Silver Bridge collapse,,but this adds a whole new dimention to it. Characters were VERY engaging (Richard Gere, again), and his co-star (Debra Messing) were totally believeable. Loved seeing it fleshed out with some new stuff. Will definitely enjoy seeing it again!

Yes I loved this movie based on actual events, the creep factor was one hundred percent even after seeing it a few times, and the actors were very convincing. A lot of very disturbing things are out there that we can never hope to explain or perhaps we are not meant to be able to but, for something to ponder on its a good start. Ready for some thing worse? then try: The Entity staring Barbera Hershey based on true life events that became impossible to stop and, The Exorcism of Emily Rose again true horror based on events that took place in Germany and involved a very high profile court case. So, you think your living in a nuts and bolts modern world? Be warned, they WILL all keep you awake at night.
This is one creepy movie that keeps your interest. I have seen it several times, read the book, and already have the VHS. I bought the DVD because in case something happened to my VHS player. I do have a problem with the widescreen version, it paused 4 times when I watched it. I chalked it up as needed cleaning so I hope there is nothing wrong with the disk. A great movie that will have the hairs on the back of Ur neck standing.

I personally visited Point Pleasant and attended various Mothman discussions and the museum there is excellent. The movie tries to keep pace with what reportedly happened but the Richard Gere character never really existed. The collapse of the bridge was really folmed well, even though the rescue of the police woman was pretty lame.

Yes, the mark man is real. There were many many similar groans, just as in the movie. There is a climactic scene where the bridge collapsed. That bridge that collapsed was about 50 miles from my home. In real life there was no thought that the Mothman had anything to do with that.
