Additional informationThere are no liner notes to speak of on Castle's 1995 compilation The Best of Bill Haley, outside of a list of other titles available form the label's MAC series, and while there may be a perfectly innocent explanation for this, it's hard not to think that whoever released this album wanted to make sure that listeners didn't realize that these were '60s re-recordings by Haley and his latter-day Comets until the last possible minute. Unlike some re-recordings, these aren't horrible -- sometimes, they're sorta fun, like with the slow swaggering groove of "See You Later Alligator" -- but they sure ain't what you want to hear if you're looking for the original versions of "Rock Around the Clock" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll," among other hits. Not a bad overview of the re-cuts and also-rans from the '60s for Haley, but it sure isn't what anybody purchasing an album called The Best of Bill Haley would want. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
