About this product

Product Information

Based on the novel 'Jessica' by Bryce Courtenay, this epic four-hour period drama traces a woman's harsh, tumultous life in the Australian bush. A sweeping saga of love, deceit and sacrifice set during the early years of the 20th century in the farmlands around Narrandera, a small frontier town in rural New South Wales, Jessica stars Leeanna Wallsman as a beautiful, spirited tomboy who rises up against the ruthless ambition of her mother. The fine cast also features Sam Neill (Jurrasic Park) in the role of the alcoholic English barrister Richard Runche, Jessica's one trusted ally in the town. A hugely successful TV mini-series, Jessica comes to DVD here for the first time.

  • Bryce Courtney, Sam Neil and Narranderra. Who could ask for more?

Bryce Courtney always writes such wonderful books and I was excited to see Jessica as a mini-series a few years ago. Sam Neil plays a drunk barrister so well and the other characters wind around him. Beautiful scenery of Narrandera NSW. Great viewing.

  • Not accurate to book but enjoyable anyway

Having already read the book, I was a little disappointed that some of what I though pertinent things were left out. I understand that it was time constrained, and I really enjoyed it, but it was not accurate to the book.

  • Australian reality!!

A wonderful Australian story!! And, not one that is all wine and roses, rather one that goes right down to the realities of humanity, both good and bad.

  • A glimpse of the past in raw detail.

The movie was made in towns that have stayed pretty much as they were from the late 1800's and up to and after the first world war and where my ancestors were living in NSW. It is a powerful story that is based on real people and the injustices experienced by the star, Jessica. I appear in the movie as a character that could have been one of my relatives in the early days and the settings their daily lives were lived, authentic.

  • Tear jerker

The characters are real, The story is gripping and the person who picked the cast should get ten out of ten. It was heart breaking but I couldn't stop watching. Great movie Loved it.

  • Amazing Aussie story, highly receommend although at times a little confronting.

Great Aussie story, the DVD is as good as the novel was. The characters are believably true to the life we imagine back in the early days of settlement. I would recommend to MA only because some scenes are a little confronting.

  • Jessica

It was a great book . Being a true story it was so moving to the heart. It tells how cruel some people are. Specially a mother towards her own daughter.
