About this product

Product Information

A series of engravings about a prostitute by 18th Century British artist William Hogarth is the inspiration behind this new historical drama. This period costume drama looks at the facts of Hogarths life and the subject of his first major series of engravings, which follow the life and death of a 22-year old prostitute arriving in Covent Garden in 18th Century London. Using these tent poles of truth, as well as the clues that Hogarth left in his engravings, the drama pieces together a fictitious version of Hogarths story, suggesting that the prostitute was a real person, and that Hogarth actually knew her.

  • Engrossing and unforgettable, highly recommended, interesting to watch many times over.

Engaging and interesting from the first scene, a deeply relevant piece of social history as experienced by William Hogarth during his lifetime. 'A Harlot's Progress' is a biographical account of a vulnerable woman who was trafficked during the 18th century. The vulnerabilities and struggles that she faced are the same as many women today, and even by every woman and child on the planet. It shows how Narcissists (pimps and traffickers) commodify others for their own consumption, and objectify everyone for the Narcissist's own gain, regardless of the ruin and damage of the victim. These are issues that we deal with now in society. This film is faultless, and so well done that it deserves watching many times over to process all of the issues and complexities, and to consider the social benefits that we have now as women, denied to previous generations. Anyone interested in social history, women's history, human rights and dignity, domestic history, the broader societal effects of prostitution and trafficking, art history and great cinema will love 'A Harlot's Progress'. Toby Jones plays William Hogarth with great nuance and complexity, while Zoe Tapper plays the vulnerable woman, and subject of Hogarth's ground breaking artwork. The empathetic viewer will be profoundly touched by 'A Harlot's Progress'.
