Reviews"This book may well seem like a ride on a bucking bronco. It is rough, tough, combative. The author is a rebel and an eloquent loner. His is a passionately felt, deeply poetic book. It has philosophy. It has humor. It has its share of nerve-tingling adventures . . . set down in a lean, racing prose, in a close-knit style of power and beauty." --Edwin Way Teale, The New York Times Book Review

Synopsis"Rough, tough, combative . . . a passionately felt, deeply poetic book."--Edwin Way Teale, The New York Times Book Review "This is not primarily a book about the desert," writes Edward Abbey in his introduction. "In recording my impressions of the natural scene I have striven above all for accuracy, since I believe that there is a kind of poetry, even a kind of truth, in simple fact. But the desertis a vast world, an oceanic world, as deep in its way and complex and various as the sea. Language makes a mighty loose net with which to go fishing for simple facts, when facts are infinite. If a man knew enough he could write a whole book about the juniper tree. Not juniper trees in general but that one particular juniper tree which grows from a ledge of naked sandstone near the old entrance to Arches National Monument. What I have tried to do then is something a bit different. Since you cannot get the desert into a book any more than a fisherman can haul up the sea with his nets, I have tried to create a world of words in which the desert figures more as medium than as material. Not imitation but evocation has been the goal.", "A passionately felt, deeply poetic book. It has philosophy. It has humor. It has its share of nerve-tingling adventures...set down in a lean, racing prose, in a close-knit style of power and beauty." THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOKREVIEW Edward Abbey lived for three seasons in the desert at Moab, Utah, and what he discovered about the land before him, the world around him, and the heart that beat within, is a fascinating, sometimes raucous, always personal account of a place that has already disappeared, but is worth remembering and living through again and again.

  • Desert Solitaire

I love the idea of this book. His descriptions are great and the details of his daily life are intriguing.. But I have had a difficult time getting into it. Still have not finished it but I will.

  • Desperately Seeking Solitaire

First read this now considered classic of the environment more than 35 yrs ago while attending classes at the U of A, Tucson,Az. Having lived in SE Az since 1970 I had experienced the wonder and joy of that desert outdoor life which Edward Abbey so richly described in his book. A mixture of personal experiences narrative, historical anecdotes with a good dose of thought provoking warnings of man's abuse, greed, and neglect of the natural world in which in lives make for an especially pleasurable read. Evoking the beauty and fragility of the desert southwest in such a way as Abbey did in this book it's no wonder why this is justly considered a classic. Read. Enjoy. React.

  • Edward Abbey's Best Work!

Desert Solitaire is a snarky, brilliant collection of prose. Chapter by chapter, Abbey lays out his personal experiences as a seasonal ranger for the National Park Service who has a deep abiding love of the landscape. His book Desert Solitaire is one to cherish over a lifetime. Once read, the reader will find themselves musing on certain passages and returning to dip into favorites time and again. If you love the likes of Louis L'Amour, John Denver and Marty Robbins, add this tome to your personal library. You're welcome!!

  • An Abbey classic!

I have read this book before but just had to have my own copy. If you are not already in love with the spare beauty of the desert (I am) then Abbey will change your mind in this classic! Book arrived in pristine condition.
