A new lease of life for my Mac Pro 1,1 - now 64-bit dual boot
If you have a Mac Pro 1,1 and want to upgrade it past OS X 10.7.5, you'll be needing one of these. I found it quite fiddly to install, but there's no way round that. Also, on my machine, some of the contacts were tight against the casing. The eliminate the possibility of a short, I place an old CD between the board and the metal case. Crude but it worked.
I've got the machine running 10.7.5 and 10.11 as a dual boot. Under 10.11, it is 64-bit, believe it or not. And it will run Adobe CS 6, which has got to be better than paying monthly rental fees.
Please be aware that not all Radeon HD 5770 cards are the same. Yes, you can pick up a cheaper one but it it came out of a PC, it's not going to have the right power connector. As it is, this card was a fairly cheap upgrade for a machine Apple would probably prefer to see obsoleted, so they could sell us all new machines instead.
