This is a delightful glimpse into the not so bygone days when hard toil and honest labor were one in the same. Historian Ruth Goodman's indefatigable spirit lights up every chore, even the grimmest ones, and there are many. Archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn determination to tackle every possible learning situation with charming ardor make this team a delight to watch. They endure an entire year in the Cornish coastal countryside; returning a once bustling farm to former glory. Individually and together they engage in many of the pursuits that earned cash for farmers and folks in this hamlet, whether it be growing cash crops of daffodils, strawberries or livestock, gathering crabs and lobsters, or concocting home-made delights from the kitchen, or learning the exhausting skill of lace making. You'll be introduced to the newest "cutting edge" machinery and technology of the Edwardian period as they tackle that particular portion of their farm year. Lambing, horse whispering, crop raising, fertilizing, copper and tin mining, cattle breeding, trout rearing and other rural skills are covered in this wonderful set. You can't fail to admire your ancestors, regardless of their origins, for having done many of these tasks all the livelong day. Hats off to this marvelous trio for having the talent and courage to make their collective experiences such a radiant homage to an age gone by! Well worth the price and a set that will be viewed often. Show this to the grandkids when they whine about chores...it may just stifle their complaints.Read full review
