SynopsisNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - From the renowned astronomer and author of Cosmos comes a "powerful [and] stirring defense of informed rationality" ( The Washington Post Book World ) in a world where fake news stories and Internet conspiracy theories play to a disaffected American populace. LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK PRIZE WINNER - "Glorious . . . A spirited defense of science . . . From the first page to the last, this book is a manifesto for clear thought."-- Los Angeles Times How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don't understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience, New Age thinking, and fundamentalist zealotry and the testable hypotheses of science? Casting a wide net through history and culture, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions. He examines and authoritatively debunks such celebrated fallacies as witchcraft, faith healings, demons, and UFOs. And yet, disturbingly, in today's so-called information age, pseudoscience is burgeoning, with stories of alien abduction, "channeling" past lives, and communal hallucinations commanding growing attention and respect. As Sagan demonstrates with lucid eloquence, the siren song of unreason is not just a cultural wrong turn but a dangerous plunge into darkness that threatens our most basic freedoms., A prescient warning of a future we now inhabit, where fake news stories and Internet conspiracy theories play to a disaffected American populace "A glorious book . . . • Good argument for rational thought which is sorely lacking today.

Some material is dated compared to what’s known today. A bit technical at times. Overall a good read.

  • An Absolute must for Clear thinking about understanding the universe

Most of the time, brilliant scientists and mathematicians write books for others of their ilk. Once in a great while, one of the "greats" writes a clear and thorough book for the rest of us. Carl Sagan was one of those. Through use of events in his own life, starting in childhood, Sagan gives step by step explanation of how wishful thinking, manipulation of the gullible, and outright fraud control the thinking of more and more people in this country. He shows how ignorance and muddled reasoning have almost become badges of honor in the public at large, making many susceptible to pseudoscientific charlatans and the claims of con-men preying on those given to magical-thinking and those just unaware of actual science. What is most disturbing is that he wrote this about thirty years ago and it is more true today. What he described as a candle in the dark has now become a candle in a windstorm. The mantle of reason laid down by Carl in 1996 has been picked up by Neil deGrasse Tyson, but the Tsunami of misinformation has grown much stronger in the last 2 decades that this book sounds more like prophecy come true than an introduction to clear thinking.
