Features Actors: Jim Carrey, Laura Linney & Ed Harris Running Time: 102 min. Rating:PG Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) is a young man in the quaint community of Seahaven, a little island, leading a regular life as an insurance salesman with his wife Meryl (Laura Linney). What he doesn't know is that all the world is actually watching his life. Unknowingly, Truman is at the center of a huge TV show that started with his birth. Ever since that day "The Truman Show" has become the most successful TV show on the planet, airing in all countries around the globe. His entire life is a travesty, a conglomerate of actors pretending to be relatives, friends and partners. Even his wife is a paid actress on her daily job. His entire world is in fact a giant soundstage with meticulously choreographed events that make up the life as he knows it. Occasionally strange things happen, like huge stage lights that seemingly fall from the sky or people trying to tell him that he is being observed, but caught in his own, whimsical world, Truman never really fathoms out their meanings. One day however, on his way to work, he can overhear a conversation on the radio that clearly indicates that someone is watching his every step, reporting everything he does over the air. Suspicious, he tries to find out more and eventually decides that in fact, people are observing him, somehow directing his life. He wants to break free and tries to leave the little island, but every attempt results in a failure. Then, one night he decides to set sail by himself to discover the truth of his existence and to meet his maker. Truman Burbank is a normal man, living in a normal town. He grew up to be a desk clerk for a insurance company, living an ordinary life, having an ordinary wife, an ordinary neighbour and an ordinary bud, who pops in from time to time with a sixpack. But Truman is not happy with his life. He wants to see the world. He wants to get away from his happy, happy, ever tidy, nice and shiny little island town at the seaside. In reality, Truman was an unwanted pregnancy. His father, Christof, a reckless TV-Producer whom he never met, made up the Truman Show, the greatest show on earth, a show in which life is live. So, everyone around poor Truman is an actor with a little headphone in the ear. One day, Truman accidentally bumps into a catering area backstage and gets pretty suspicious. His plan now is, pretend to be sleeping and steal away. Thought provoking, funny, entertaining, short, enjoyable and well acted throughout, well worth seeing and well worth adding this movie to your library.Read full review
I didn't think I would like the Truman Show. I was expecting Jim Carrey over the top humour and contorted faces. I was wrong. Really wrong! The Truman Show is the epitome of "reality shows" (and hopefully our own reality shows will never go as far). Truman grows up as the unknowing star of his own reality show. Everything is television, and nothing is real-- even though it's real to Truman. Jim Carrey is brilliant as Truman, and Ed Harris plays the steely and yet passionate producer/director/'god' watching over Truman. I liked this movie because it really showed off some of the uglier parts of what television can be, but also made distinct that the beautiful parts of our lives, like love, are real no matter what. Give this movie a shot. It's dramatic and moving and funny, and NOT you typical Jim Carrey film. Yay!Read full review
Took me to watch 2x before I totally understood the plot. Seems Truman (Jim Carrey) is clueless as to what is going on until a woman he meets captivates him and he becomes a bit obsessive about finding her again. He's married, in a very odd world and the object of his affections is the only link to reality he sees. One watches Truman and feels he's the only one who hasn't gotten it yet, but when he finally does, he tries his best to leave, without success, well, until the very end when he finally does. The exit is expected and naturally it's a feel good movie, but, man, what a journey getting there! Movie is slow starting but, it does redeem itself midway through and the ending is worth watching.
I I Like Jim Carrey and also because the movie is celebrating 20 years it was a good price and a good price. Thumbs Up for me on this movie and the purchase of this movie.
