One simple way to add variety to your goods wagon fleet is to build some from the many kits on offer. To do so will also add some fun and satisfaction into to your modelling activities. This kit from Peco builds into a pair of 10ft wheelbase cattle wagon, or cattle truck as they were also known. These wagons were used to carry livestock, which had to be crammed in, standing up, so that they would support each other and therefore not be thrown around. They were also used to transport fruit and vegetables, and when used in this way the upper section was covered with a tarpaulin. They were also used to carry barrels of beer, taking advantage of the ventilation to keep it cool! You can legitimately include a cattle wagon or two in a passenger train formation, as they were among a small number.
