I purchased a pair of these tubes hoping to tame the preamp in my Marshall Class 5 tube amp. Bought the Marshall used and came with tungsol 12ax7 tubes installed. Tungsols are great tubes but not in this amp.... way too much gain for my preference. These 12AY7s worked very nice. Opened up the clean headroom before breakup really well. Its still pretty dang loud but a lot more controlled gain. Blues/Rock Lead Style playing. Better note definition. I haven't recorded it yet....but should be a lot better.

I have been using a GT ECC81 (more amplification) for the last several years in my tube mic and I decided to drop to the lower amp tube... What a difference it made. Before, I would overdrive the mic easily... Now, singers can get right up to the mic and it never overdrives... Plus, it has a much more 'mellow' sound.. Very clean... It's made a huge difference in our vocals... Randy

I bought this tube because EH has a solid reputation for quality and I need a tube that is not microphonic and sounds fine. I love that this tube is not microphonic and sounds fine in the amp. It did not get a 5 because it doesn't have the magic sparkle of a NOS Mullardor RCA tube for example.
Lower gain than NOS USA product. Probably by 6 to 10 db. Otherwise it seems to work, but not a direct replacement.

Needed a low gain replacement for a 12ax7 preamp. This does that job.

Great tube gives excellent head room to a Fender Blues Deluxe reissue amp and a little more volume control... Nice clean warm tone.
