These are, after all, a re-creation of an old excellent tube. They are by no means as good as NOS (New Old Stock) or old used ones in terms of richness or lushness, but they cost much less and for what they are, are pretty decent. Depending upon your desires and pocketbook, they can be a nice tube, however, in an "audiophile" system, I would recommend going with an old tube rather then any re-issue. In a guitar amp or on a budget, or in a smaller reasonably priced system, they can be a good choice.

It came time to replace the pre-amp valves in my '64 Fender Bandmaster but rather than go Chinese (or fakes), I decided to give these Mullards a try. The Mullard Radio Valve Co. Ltd. of Southfields UK was a premium name back in the day when valves/vacuum tubes was still the norm for amplification. Mullard eventually shut down because the tech got eclipsed by solid-state. Someone bought Mullard's facilities, crated it to the USSR and today, that's where these "re-issues" come from. My amp now delivers fuller sound but I don't know if it's because the valves are just new, or if it's because they're Mullards (which I can only hope are genuine).

Tubes were shipped and arrived promptly. These were installed in a EAR 834P phono stage where each 1/2 of the tube serves each channel. These were used in the output and cathode follower stages. I rotated different 12ax7 input tubes, NOS RCA, new Genelex and new Tungsol tubes. The Mullards have tube noise and slight pop coming through my Avalion speakers and do not sound good. I have extensive experience with Mullards used in Audio Resarch preamps. These do not meet my expectations. Preamp is Ayre solid state. Lettering on tubes is not clear as shown in picture. Not sure if these were the same tubes as intended in auction. I am not using this pair until I can confirm these are not defective.

The MC1 (square getter) Mullard long plate 12AX7 tube gets everything right. No other 12AX7 comes close in terms of inner detail and natural overall musical presentation of great recordings.. particularly in the all-important upper midrange. More importantly, the MC 1 long plate Mullard 12AX7 lends a sense of space and a depth of soundstage to well-recorded music, particularly when used in tube phono preamps. MC 1 Mullards make music!

These are great preamp tubes for Marshall amps. I use them in my '70, '71' and '73 Hiwatt and Marshall guitar amps and even in my brand new Freidman plus my buddy's new Mesa. The best smooth "clean" tone and they break up really nicely for the "overdriven" tones..
