The author is so genuine and authentic in sharing her thoughts and feelings of what it is like to live with a diagnosis of stage IV colon cancer. I found the book to be insightful and inspiring.

It wasn't what I expected. I thought it would be a book that one by one countered a lot of "lovable" lies, but it's really more of a general reflection on illness and death and faith. I wouldn't say it has "a" message; just a reflection. It was still very good though because it was honest where most people might not be.

While not an exhaustive foray into spiritual speculation, Bowler uses her difficult situation to illustrate true faith and present what she's learning from her time of trial. I very much appreciate someone writing like this, vulnerable and transparent. If you are looking for an exhaustive list of answers to questions of suffering, this isn't it. But, it is encouraging and practical. The appendix even lists what to say and not say to people during their times of trial. Bowler is a good writer and though obviously academic, her candid integrity here is something to be appreciated. Although she doesn't go entirely into the effects of charismatic theology, reading this made me want to read her previous book, Blessed.

I guess I thought it would have more answers to connecting in a religious way when someone is facing their own mortality. Some readers have expressed it was light and humorous, but I don't feel this topic can identify with those words at all.

Finally someone has given real-life suggestions about what to and not to say to someone dealing with a life and death disease. I have already taken the author's suggestions to heart and implemented them. The appendix contains the dos and do nots.
