England in the early 19th century Century: After the death of her parents, young Mary moves in with her aunt Patience, who runs a dark harbor dive with her husband Joss on the rocky coast of Cornwall. Mary soon discovers that Joss is the leader of a band of pirates who use false beacons to cause ships to hit the reef, murder the crew and make off with the cargo. On her first evening, Mary watches as the gang tries to hang their youngest member, Jem Trehearne. But Mary manages to cut the noose and escape with Jem. Jem is a government agent and allowed himself to be infiltrated into the gang in order to stop them. However, he does not yet know the mastermind of the pirate gang, who always has to be surprisingly well informed about the ship's routes and from whom Joss receives his instruction.
