There she finds security as the wife of a devoted and dull fisherman. and passion in the arms of his provocative best friend. Film noir master Fritz Lang (The Big Heat, Ministry of Fear) directs four towering talents, Barbara Stanwyck, Paul Douglas, Robert Ryan and rising star Marilyn Monroe, in a stark tale of lives burnished by human emotion and shattered by human failings.
A great drama even holds up to today - a real classic!
I am a big fan of classic and film noir films. Barbara Stanwyck, of course, holds her own in this very human drama. It is exciting as a Marilyn Monroe fan to see how this film was Marilyn's very first meaty role before her fame in "Niagara". Even in this film, Marilyn is brilliant. I feel that Paul Douglas was not quite right for his role as the betrayed husband; (Barbara Stanwyck being the wife torn between Paul Douglas and Robert Ryan). Robert Ryan was well cast as the bad boy that Stanwyck could not resist - and suffers the consequence of her actions. The way it was filmed was a ahead of it's time - and fabulous story written by one of the great play writes - Clifford Odets. Fritz Lang directed this picture with great ideas and in the Special Features section which I recommend, he now and again gives his insight into his vision for this film. I would not call this a Film Noir movie as such but it does have here and there, a little flavour of that vein. Highly recommend this Classic Drama.
I have liked this movie for a long time. A great classic with Barbara Stanwyck, Paul Douglas, and Robert Ryan. Marilyn Monroe as a young actress is very good. Acting is great. Some drama and very entertaining. The characters are worth watching. I recommend this movie.
