Shift linkage and poor instructions ruin these controls
As others have noted, the instructions are garbage, but you can probably work through them. I won't dwell on it here, other than to mention the beauty cap for the mid-control shift arm is installed on the new linkage. I spent a few minutes looking for it before I figured that out.
The bigger issue is function. The shift pivot is too tight, so the shift lever does not return to its midpoint after a shift. I must move my foot to the other side of the lever and move it an inch before I can rattle off successive shifts - a pain that results in missed shifts and a potential safety issue. My bike had the classic Harley crispness with the factory mids, but now it's a sloppy mess. I've owned or ridden many HDs with forward controls and they've all been world's better than this junk.
At least the brake side works well.
I purchased and installed these just as my girlfriend and I were leaving for a 2,100 mile cross-country trip, figuring forwards would make the journey much more comfortable. The positioning is OK, though I felt the controls are a little too far forward. (Note: I got the regular forward controls, not the reduced or extended reach versions. I'm 6 feet tall with a 32" inseam.)
They are pretty enough when the bike is on its side stand, though after only a week I'm noticing rust on the linkage length-adjustment threads. There are a few welds that aren't great to look at, but you won't be unless you're under the bike. But you're spend more time on the bike wondering where that shift lever is than admiring the chrome polish, if my experience is any guide.
Beatifull product, and made with pride that shows, by the custom fit packaging. Will buy more kuryakyn products. Fully satisfied with the other products that I have purchased also!!!!!
A great reputation speaks for itself. One issue: there is no allowance for the chrome plating on the threads and it will need to be removed for proper fitment. A die set is a must for this job. Cut the shift lever retainer and it'll easily fit. Throw away the instructions as they are useless. Pedal adjustments are simple. Other than removing to chrome plating it was a simple installation. High quality and it shows. If you have any concerns about doing the job yourself.. don't even think about it. I'm happy and the bike looks great.
