  • A great piece of hardware, software no so great

This NAS was super easy to set up; install the drives (tool-free), plug in the network cable, plug in power, and away you go. However, getting it to connect with Mac and Windows 10 machines took a couple of hours. Just hard to configure the hosts, and Netgear's documentation was very little help. Not recommended if yo have never connected a NAS before. Highly recommended if you are patient and have some networking experience.

  • Excellent product, Great features for file storage!

This item is great for remote storage but is a bit under powered if you use it to stream full HD media to 5 users you going to have lag and should get a faster machine. The next model up has 4x the ram, 2 or 4 processors and can Transcode on the fly, but is also prohibitively more expensive. So go for that if this is for use as a Movie Server. Great for file operations and backups! I use 'gpg' file encryption then ssh and secure file copy to transfer backups using cron jobs on Ubuntu! Plex media server 'App' would not install after updating this box, but worked perfectly after I logged in via ssh and issued a 'apt-get install plex' on the command line and viola! Got Plex! This box runs Debian Jessie so the CLI is similar to Ubuntu and easy to use. Note that you MUST have an HDD installed to start the setup process with these devices. If you press and hold the Reset button while powering on the device it will enter a weird setup mode. There is no display so the "menu" is Leds on the front and knowing just how the Leds are lighted. I had to learn to navigate the 'led' menu and by pressing the 'Backup button' until the leds were light according to the online manual (see: Netgears article on how to access the boot menu). Then press reset to confirm your menu selection. Anyway after I booted it in factory reset mode, had my router assign a static IP address and was then able to access the Web interface all was easy peasy from there. Supports 1000+ user accounts, can be configure as JBOD, RAID0 RAID1, and can be accessed by Windows Server as a Logical Unit Number or LUN, and used with Active Directory. NOTE ALSO, the Self Format after loading an HDD can take a long time depending on how big your drive(s) are! I started with 2TB and it took 20+ minutes before the leds went solid blue and was ready for setup. The only way for me to know what was happening (because there is no graphic menu on the front of the NAS) was to install RAIDar on a Virtual Machine and drop the VM on my network to view the status of the NAS. RAIDar doesn't really work on Ubuntu, so I used a VM. RAIDar will then tell you if it's formatting or when it's ready. This NAS can be managed from the Cloud and has free Antivirus! I warn off users to the Cloud management feature because I noticed when I logged into the Website at Netgear I was immediately stripped from HTTPS and placed onto an HTTP connection while my data was showing!!! Horrible! However, I am very happy with the valid HTTPS Certificates which make access to the Local Web Panel interface on the NAS very secure, but the Website security is atrocious! Too many home devices have expired or invalid certs, making them unable to access through https on a modern browser at home. The box says 8TB storage ability but the website states that it can have 16TB. It may mean 8TB+8TB on a RAID1 for a total of 8TB although I haven't tested it. Every user in the house can have their own account and privacy on this device, as files from one user cannot be accessed by another. Encryption can be a bit of trouble because if you choose to Encrypt this device it will not boot without a USB key inserted (not the same an having an encrypted home folder). Encrypting this device does in fact encrypt the data and folders/files cannot be accessed when removing the drive and placing it in another system for analysis. This kills the file sharing to anonymous users however , and you must have an account to use the NAS after encryption. I recommended encrypting your data before you transfer it that way you can avoid having the USB key hanging out of the front, and besides...trust your own encryption first! Only 2 bays for disks, but if you want to upgrade the size of your storage it's as simple as taking out on of the drives and placing the newer larger drive into the box and letting it sync. Then reboot and the system will recognize the new sizes. It is limited by 2 bays but it does have an ESata expansion slot so you can add more to it but for 100 bucks this was a steal!

  • Amazing product

This is an amazing product with lots of useful applications. For me, the best app is bittorrentsync which I'm using to backup my laptop and Android phone on it.

  • Works great!

Haven't tested speed yet but... It was very difficult to set up. I powered it on and it was stuck at the blinking light. So I stuck in a hard drive, did a firwmare reset and now it works. Glad I didn't get a defective unit.
