About this product

Product Information

The Sony SEL 28-70mm full-frame camera lens for Sony E-mount cameras provides a flexible range for capturing images with its capability of zooming from 28mm to 70mm. The seven-blade, circular aperture pushes beyond the standard for an improved defocusing experience. The premium blades used inside also allow for enhancements to the bokeh effect. The aspherical lens and extra-low dispersion glass are a powerful combination meant to reduce distortion and create images with brilliant contrast, resolution, and color fidelity. Image stabilization reduces the risk associated with out of focus and blurry results. The usage of quiet linear motors helps to achieve this. With the dust and moisture-resistant design, feel the freedom of securing photographs of wildlife and landscapes. Anyone who's interested in landscape photography finds that this lens works particularly well. Photographers find it easy to carry this lightweight lens on photo expeditions. This specific 28-70mm zoom lens is compatible with all Sony E mountings. Any Sony cameras, such as the A7R, that are compatible with these mountings are able to accommodate these OSS lenses. The 28-70mm zoom allows for full frame capture, ensuring that you get a wide view of your images. The full frame capability of the Sony Zeiss 28-70mm lenses is set to a maximum format size of 35mm, to replicate standard 35mm film. This 28-70mm Zeiss lens comes in stylish black coloring that ensures it fits well with any camera you use it with. At just over 10 ounces, carrying it with you is a breeze. This light weight ensures that your arms don't get tired in lengthier shoots. As for the aperture range of this specific zoom lens, it ranges from f3.5-5 at maximum. The minimum is set to f/22. In regard to the ED glass mentioned previously, this glass was specifically made to accommodate longer focal lengths. The result of this glass is pristine image quality and a reduction in chromatic aberration. This is the case even at large settings. The aspherical lens elements of these Sony 28-70mm items ensure that light rays pass accurately through the lens for a clear picture that's not affected by artificial elements. This also assists greatly with keeping image quality high and reducing its size and weight. While this specific item was designed primarily to be used alongside photography, it also works well for anyone that shoots video. The inherent sharpness of the images caught by this item, as well as its high performance, ensure that your videos are captured well. In order to focus on an object with this type of lens, the middle groups within the optical system are the only ones to move. This keeps the length of the OSS the same no matter how much you zoom in. Additional benefits to be found with this product include extremely quick auto focusing and a filter thread that doesn't move. This is especially beneficial if you use a polarizing filter.

    Underrated lens

Used as a kit lens the 28-70 f/3.5-5.6 FE from Sony is a bargain lens. Nice focal range for full frame or APS-C sized sensor cameras. DxOMark rates this lens on par with lenses more than double the price. Sharp in the center with minimum chromatic abberation and distortion. It's not as spectacular as a low light prime but it is a perfect inexpensive all around lens which will spend a lot of time on your camera if you are traveling, at a family affair or just going out for some street photography.

Very disappointing lens due to veiling glare or haze

This lens is sharp but that being said the images are *very* often degraded by a high amount of haze or glare. The haze requires a lot of post processing to reduce to a tolerable level. I have not yet been able to pin the problem down to whether there is an urgent need for a lens hood (not supplied with the lens and not cheap as a Sony product + 3rd party products that will fit are the wrong shape to adequately shade a 28-70mm lens), or that this lens is somehow faulty, or that it is a general quality of this model lens.

  • Sony's Best Value for Full Frame-Under Rated

I don't know what the fuss online about this lens being no good is all about. It has been compared to the similar Zeiss on Dpreview and if you can find that review, take the test and then tell me it's no good then I'll say you don't know what you are talking about. Sharp images throughout range. Camera corrects for any distortion that's caused and each end of the lens and although it is all plastic, it does have a good metal mount. Now, when you add the fact that this can be purchase for a third of the cost of the Zeiss,, there is no comparison, for me anyway. Good travel zoom! You must know what lens you want for what type of photos you are going to take. Are you going to print them, then buy a good prime lens.. Going on a trip, this will do just fine for all, or most I should say, of your needs.

  • Sony 28-70 f/3.5-5.6 review

I have had this lens for about two years and I am happy with it. It originally came as a kit lens with my Sony A7ll. Having had kit lenses with other cameras I really did not expect it to be all that great. After using this lens for six months it occured to me I was getting really sharp photos with very little distortion. I have seen some people knock this lens on you-tube. I believe they are either trying to sound more knowledgeable than they are or they have not really taken an objective look at the photos this lens produces. I now use this lens on my A7lll camera and it works even better on this camera. If you check Dxomark's lens evaluations you will see it rated pretty high. It isn't going to be as good as a 2000 dollar prime lens but as an all around zoom lens it is very good. IT IS ALSO VERY INEXPENSIVE! Your really can't go wrong with this lens!

  • Well built, excellent value

Just because it's plastic doesn't mean the build quality is poor. And just because it's a kit lens, doesn't mean it's terrible. I'm pleased with mine. It's plenty sharp for 5x7,8x10 even 11x14 prints. No reason for me to print larger. It's plenty sharp for posting online and social media. Mine's well built, focusing is smooth and doesn't make a sound. The manual focus ring is large and easy to use.Great everyday lens. Great compliment to the couple of primes, a macro and a longer zoom that I have. My few knocks, probably because I'm a bit old school, I miss the focus distance and aperture markings you used to see on lenses. There's also no hard stop to focusing. Might be tricky to focus to infinity. The work around is to set the camera to DMF (direct manual focus) and use the viewfinder to manually focus to infinity. Photographer Ken Rockwell says it best: "the Zeiss lenses are sharper if you spend your life indoors looking at the corners of zoomed-in images on computer screens, but for people who actually get out, shoot and hang one-man shows in galleries, this lens is more than sharp enough" (quote is from his review of the lens from his website)

  • Fairly good kit lens for budget minded.

Works. Focuses fairly fast, on par with similarly priced glass from major competitors. Average aperture values, but that's expected in zoom lens for this price. Plenty sharp if you know what you are doing and align features with expectations.

  • My new regular lens

The range of this lens is what I like...I can zoom in . It is the lens I use the most, not as compact as the 16-50 mm, but I find it to be more versatile

  • Cheap and cheerful

This lens is really quite impressive for the price it can now be had at. It is never going to be as sharp as your full frame camera can go but it's versatile enough for holiday snaps and anything you aren't printing 30" across. The OSS is also remarkably good for the price.

  • A Great choice when you don't want to lug around a bunch of lenses...

Very light weight, good image quality, does need adequate lighting when zoomed in. This is a good inexpensive carry around lens for when your not packing all your primes/telephoto/Wide angle lenses. Great for mid range people/portraits. Quick Auto focus as well.
