The Cannon 550D is a great compact DSLR with a ton of features packed into a body that is slightly smaller than many DSLR cameras of this calibre. It's also very versatile. It's a great entry level camera with enough tech. packed in to suit even more experienced photographers. It works as a "point and shoot" camera in full Auto mode and features several very intuitive semi-automatic modes, enabling the user to begin to take some control of the settings with the reassurance that the camera's on board computers will always give you a good exposure as you learn. No more missed shots as you begin to take some control and have some input into the style of the photos you are taking! If you are already experienced behind the camera the 550D has all the features you need to keep on taking great photographs. In the numerous semi-auto modes you can focus on composition and other creative choices without having to worry about the technical aspects of a shot. But of course you can switch it in to manual mode whenever you want full control. With s built in light meter and in viewfinder graphics telling you how to correct any possible errors, this camera offers everything a photographer of any skill level could need. Great value for money I have had mine for over 5 years and i will not part with it. I recently purchased the Canon 6D as I want a beast for low light.. The 550D accompanied with the right lenses will give great low light photos but I just wanted more as I progressed into photography and now I shoot weddings so the Canon 6D will be my go to camera for weddings but I know I can trust my 550D as a solid backup should anything go wrong .. I purchased my 550D Brand new from Harvey Norman for $990 with a kit lens but have since replaced my kit lenses except the 55mm f3.5 as it still gives sharp photos - The 550D is dependable reliable and not bulky to carry but as previously stated I now have 7 lenses and I will not give up my 550D camera ever ..

I bought this when B&H Photo had a firesale in the USA. Cheap as chips and offered really good image quality for the size. AF is average, but as a pro videographer I used manual all the time anyway. A great second cam or holiday cam.
