This is one of the best books of short stories I have read. Chabon is a virtuoso of the short story form, and his skill becomes apparent in stories like, “Son of the Wolfman,” and, “Spikes.” I hate to read anything twice, but many of these stories demanded an immediate second reading. Chabon has a florid style of writing that is surprisingly easy to read. He is a master of using reoccurring thematic elements that come together at the end of the story in such a surprising and beautiful way, that I nearly dropped the book. This is also the book that contains the genre horror story “In the Black Mill” at the end. Although well written, it doesn’t stand up as well as the other stories, and it isn’t really scary. But if the Beatles had just stuck to what they were doing with the “Help” album, without exploring their craft, we’d be left with a couple of really nice 50’s tunes. Not as cluttered as Proulx, or as self-conscious as Mailer, Werewolves in their Youth raises the quality of the modern cannon.Read full review
