The pre amps after time can become noisy, especially channel 8/16 for reasons unproven, but I think most likely due to constant plugging and unplugging input jack cracks develop on soldered joints on circuit board and create noise. I am quite sure this is why manufacture was discontinued.I have worked with electronics for many years and have seen similar issues with mixers. Software will sometimes switch off unit if there is malfunction detected which is annoying if dubbing from analog multitrack (in my case). The 24 bit setting should be exclusively used as the 16bit setting will not give enough headroom for live recording, although the unit seems to have compressors on each channel to avoid harsh clipping but this will reduce dynamic range in 16 bit setting. If you are dubbing and can check that each track is recording correctly after each track the unit is good, however for live recording it is a bit hit and miss (in my experience) as a the unit will turn off for reasons unknown now and then. I would suggest making a short xlr loom that stays plugged in to avoid unplugging each time, but make sure pins are clean when first plugging and keep unit awau from sea air and the like. Overall, when it works correctly you'll get a good recording in 24bit mode but I've seen channels fail so for this reason and noise issues in pre-amp so I can,t give it more than three stars. I wish Zoom would rectify issues and release a newer version as they are handy tools that I've taken around the world as carry on items to record on location but can fail at times in the present form.Read full review
