This is a book that everyone should read at least once in their lives. The two stories are tales that even though written seventy years ago, are an almost accurate portrayal of the circumstances that were horrific to contemplate back then, but which many have grown to accept as normal today. It is only people over the age of seventy that can reveal and talk about the impact of these scary predictions which the young of today are totally blind to and unable to compare how freedom of life once was.

I have wanted to read both of George Orwell's books since studying them many years ago in High School. Finding them both together is so cost effective, and the introductions by Charlotte Wood and Don Watson have invigorated my desire to read these two books again. This collection is a great value for my money and so glad that I have been able to purchase them combined under the one cover.

Both 1984 and Animal Farm were written ahead of their time. Re-reading both novels are a reminder not to take our democracy for granted. Particularly 'Animal Farm' has strong parallels of what some governments are today and not to be complacent with the freedoms we already have. I remember studying both of these novels in early High School, but I doubt very much that would be the case these days. In essence - just be careful what you wish for, you might just regret it.

Orwell speaks for himself...revolutionary for its time. Was mandatory reading at school so the best bit of compulsory reading I have ever done.
