While I was compiling my collection of HHGTTG recordings I ran into this 2018 production of a sixth installment. At first I was concerned that it was based on Eoin Colfer’s book “And Another Thing” and notes by Douglas Adams. I needn’t worry, this installment is just as zany and weird as any previous one. It was good to hear the same crew voicing the main characters as it creates a familiar sound-scape for the whole series. The play covers three CDs, more than three hours of delirious entertainment. The Vogon’s Galactic Hyperspace Planning Council notes that when Earth is destroyed it is replaced by an identical Earth from another dimension which is something that happens in “Plurals” such as ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha. This time they are determined to destroy Earth in all dimensions along with its inhabitants. A monocephalic Zaphod Beeblebrox curtails his bid for re-election as President of the Galaxy (whose campaign slogan would make any right thinking US citizen cringe: “Make Alpha Centauri Great Again”) to buy a planet from the Magratheans and sell it to a conglomeration of well-to-do earthlings because of curiosity, the sense of adventure but mostly for the money. This planet, known as Nano, becomes humanity’s refuge during the assault on Earth. Zaphod also manages Aesirian Thor’s bid to become Nano’s god. In a dual with another immortal, Bowerick Wowbagger, Thor de-immortalizes Wowbagger and disappears fending off the Vogon’s relentless attack on the humans of Nano thus cementing his place as Nano’s deity. Trillian Astra still has issues with her daughter, Random Frequent Flyer Dent, especially over her marriage to a flaybooz (an intelligent gerbil like creature) named Fertile. Trillian hands off Random to her Father, Arthur Dent, to resolve the issue of her “marriage” and elopes with a second (Zaphod being the first) non-human lover, Wowbagger. This proves that with a degree in maths and another in astrophysics she still doesn’t have any sense. This is a fitting and happy end to the whole story. Arthur mends Random’s feud with Trillian and his estrangement as her Father and reunites with a refurbished Sirius Cybernetics robot with GPP (Yeah, its Marvin) and with someone else (trying not to spoil here ;). Ford Prefect with his job reinstated as a researcher for the Hitchhiker’s Guide plans to review every spa and massage parlor on Nano on thirty Altairian dollars a day. Zaphod flies off to resume his campaign for Galactic President and even Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz indulges in a momentary semi-fondness for his son. However, this is the end of the story as there is no more cannon (pieces written wholly or in part by Adams). There may be other tales from the Hitchhiker’s Guide just as funny and ingenious but they won’t be part of Adam’s legacy. P. S. I’m not getting you down am I? God! I’m so depressed.
