As the dramatic plot progresses, the main character's loyalties are tested. Your skills as a player are equally under pressure in this exciting game. “Sleeping Dogs” is a third-person game with an impressive open world. The gameplay is visceral and brutal. Its varied nature means that players are unlikely to get bored. Gamers perform a wide range of martial arts moves and partake in gunfights with a huge arsenal of weapons. There are also car chases and vehicular shootouts that keep the action fresh throughout each level. If you ever get tired of the story mission, explore the open urban environment. Play mini games of poker, bet on cockfights, sing karaoke, and take part in illegal street races. The game centers around Wei Shen, who has recently transferred to Hong Kong from the San Francisco Police Department. The game follows him as he takes on an undercover mission to destroy the Sun On Yee, a dangerous gang. Wei Shen must use all of his skills of deception and martial arts power to emerge victorious. Characters must help the police while simultaneously committing crimes to prove loyalty to the gang. Making the wrong decisions can blow your cover. The majority of the action is melee-based, in which gamers complete combo moves to defeat enemies. Weapons like knives and tire irons are picked up to help in fights.“Sleeping Dogs” presents a realistic, detailed, and vivid depiction of Hong Kong. Players traverse through four different areas that are based on real parts of the city. Staff from the game's developer, United Front Games, actually visited the island to do research while making the game. A blend of English and Cantonese dialog makes the great setting feel even more authentic. This Definitive Edition for the PS4 incorporates upgraded visuals and sounds, making for a better overall gaming experience. Also included are 24 pieces of DLC that were found in the original PlayStation 3 game. The biggest add-on is Year of the Snake, the events of which take place after the main story. In it, Shen must bring down a cult that wants to destroy the city. The other main DLC is Nightmare in North Point. In this horror-themed playing experience, Shen must rescue his girlfriend after she's kidnapped by a ghost. This edition's added features also allow you to tailor the character to your preferences for a more personalized experience.“Sleeping Dogs” was developed in a combined effort by United Front Games and Square Enix. Fresh, compelling, and long-lasting.
Despite the technological prowess and biting satire of GTA, Sleeping Dogs sets itself apart from other urban open worlds in some big ways: - Compelling undercover cop storyline in a new setting - Hong Kong as opposed to America - under a tighter yet smoothly-progressive mission structure where you are good and bad - or more of one over the other. - Side quests that support the narrative elements and your abilities, often funny or interesting. So many street races, too, and the driving mechanics are tight and awesome; the RAM ability... A Godsend of fun. - Collectibles scattered throughout that aid your progression. Health shrines increase your max health; Jade Statues earn you a point to learn a new fighting move and a life lesson, lockboxes for cash and clothes, and more. - Hong Kong is alive thanks to authentic representation of Cantonese-English language mixing in NPCs and main characters, interesting random urban life moments ("Help! He stole my purse!" - Drop-kicking the guy is hilarious every time), a strong attention to environmental detail based on wise on-location scouting done during development, and your various options and challenges around every corner assuring you'll do much more than missions with flexibility. - An emphasis on melee combat than gunplay, even though gunplay will take up a nice chunk. It's also sensical; this is a story about gangsters that are aware of their environments and the impact of their actions, and an emphasis on gun combat would make Hong Kong an unrealistic warzone, because an over-the-top satire like GTA this is not. This is, however, a believable, personal crime-cop thriller where you'll be attached to the characters in surprising ways led by a compelling lead, Wei Shen, voiced by Will Yun-Lee. Aside from him, Kelly Hu and other notable voice and Hollywood actors are here. Best to not spoil, but you've heard some before and they do a good job. Their characters feel like they serve a role in Wei's journey rather than random criminals with a few missions before they disappear. Sleeping Dogs does suffer, though, from lack of technological polish. Wei can be wonky to control frequently due to his heavy weight in-game (but his character is light and fit), character models can look like plastic dolls, animations can be weak at times, and the freaking camera has an annoying mind of its own. After a while, you learn to leave the camera alone. Then there are the gunplay mechanics which are servicable at best. While it feels good to shoot, some button choices for cover, picking up weapons and leaping won't always stick and might risk your life in combat. If you're used to more traditional/popular cover-shooter mechanics in action games, this game will take some getting used to. Overall, gun combat was still fun and didn't overstay its welcome, serving the narrative well, too. Sleeping Dogs may have its issues, but the fun and variety is long-lasting and like no other thanks to the emphasis on melee combat, collectibles that serve you, and variety in challenges. It's fresh and even when you're done with the lengthy story missions, nothing you do is boring. Even drinking soda gives you increased melee damage, and that can come in handy when doing drug busts where you have to kick thugs' asses first - who are all over and progressively get tougher - hack cameras, and direct cops to arrest them during a deal later. Added cop rep equals handy abilities. And not to mention the criminal side quests. Be good and bad, have all the same fun. Make sure you have a pork bun, because a man who never eats pork buns is never a whole man. You'll know what I mean when you play. *The PS4 edition comes with two DLC missions and slightly-better textures and character models, but only marginally. Quality Remaster
It appears Squaresoft and a third-party have remastered Sleeping Dogs for the PS4, and they did a pretty good job transferring the last-gen game play and graphics ported to the new system. For the money I believe it is worth it, still has a very good storyline that males you want to complete all the various missions and side stories. Why don't you have a pork bun in your hand
A man who never eats pork bun is never a whole man. I LOVE this game! Purchased it for PC, now purchased it for my PS4. I love just spending time in the beautiful world of Hong Kong, driving around visiting vendors, seeing the sights once I finished the games main story. While I have some logical issues with how the story line is written and develops it's not enough to detract from the game. The fighting is great and pretty accurate to Martial Arts. Sleeping Dogs is a large anomaly in the Open World Street Crime Genre. Diverging from its contemporaries, Sleeping Dogs provides stellar Gun-play and combat.
