Mirror lenses are not all made the same -- some are terrible, others are great -- so I did quite a bit of research before looking for this Tamron model. For a lens which was phased out in the early 80s, this arrived in great condition. I'd read varying reports from people who had used this and other lenses -- like the slightly improved 55BB version of this same product -- and my main concern was that it wouldn't be sharp enough. However, I have used enough lenses to know how easy it is to miss the focus and blame the gear. Missing the focus is even more of a problem with a mirror lens -- and the depth of field of mirror lenses is painfully thin -- so as I took it out for its first go at picture-taking, I was wary that the results might not be spectacular. However, I was pleasantly surprised. That excellent sharpness and clarity that I had read about in so many reviews came through straight away (this lens is not as sharp as a traditional refractive lens, but it is still sharp). A lot of people moan about the fixed aperture, but when you consider how much a similar refractive lens would cost and how big those lenses are, it becomes clear that this is lovely to own. Particularly because it is light and small enough to be both portable and hand-holdable, too. The only thing I would say is watch out for the AF confirmation chip on the back of the lens. When I first attached the lens, my camera got totally confused and then displayed that classic Canon Error message. This was easily solved though -- I just put some black duct tape over it (a problem you will always have, pretty much, with all old lenses on new cameras). Now, it works in full manual mode exactly as it should. Looking forward to getting this out again soon!Read full review

Fantastic lens, I purchased this as well as two others from a different manufacturers. The Tamron knocked the pots off em! I wanted a lens with higher magnification specifically for Astro Photography as I already own a nice selection of wide field lenses. I also have a number of telescopes but they take lots of time and a large heavy mount to get half decent results. I was so impressed with the quality and detail I was able to achieve specially with the fixed aperture that I immideately started looking for the Tamron 2x Teleconverter to bump it up to 1000mm and found one on ebay at a bargain price in new condition. With some adjustments to the exposure excellent results can be achieved the adaptall system is just spot on. I use it mainly with a canon crop sensor attached to a star tracker mounted on a manfrotto photographic tripod. This means the weight of all my kit is kept to a minimum and I am able to travel with little fuss, throw my gear in the car and go to the best locations. I can be set up in no time. "Just like having a telescope on the camera really" GREAT LENS - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - TAMRON 2X CONVERTER AND TRIPOD IS A MUST!Read full review

A super lens that delivers the desired effect. Sharpness when mounted is fine. As good a mirror lens as I have had.
